What times do you put your central heating on for

Trying to work out what times to put out radiators on, dh doesn't approve of my times 😂 we have a big draughty house and I'm just so cold today. It's wet and horrible and I just want to be warm. I am walking around in my coat and it's just not fun to be this way.

Normally 6-10am and 5-10pm but if we're cold during the day we will boost the heating during the day too. Thermostat around 19⁰C when it's on. Off overnight

ufucoffee · 08/01/2022 15:15

Ours is on from 5-7 a.m then 5-8 p.m during the week, and 8-10 then 4-8 at weekends. If I'm in during the day I try not to put it on, wear jumpers etc but having to wear a coat indoors sounds awful, poor you.

ISpyCobraKai · 08/01/2022 15:17

I have mine on 24hrs in winter, I just adjust the heat, so overnight it's just enough to take chill off.

ufucoffee · 08/01/2022 15:17

Thermostat is currently set for 18 btw.

bigredbag · 08/01/2022 15:25

I'll have to check the thermostat actually.

Usually only evenings on weekdays - from about 5pm onwards until I go to bed. A bit more at weekends depending on what I'm doing. Would love it on more but I can't afford several hundreds of pounds bills on a single income.

wendz86 · 08/01/2022 15:28

Mine goes on around 6.30-8.30 . Then around 12-2 as am working at home at the moment . Then comes back on around 5.30-10.30.

LakeShoreD · 08/01/2022 15:28

All the time and I adjust via the thermostat. It’s set to 19 during the day and we turn it down to 16 overnight (very rarely kicks in).

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 08/01/2022 15:32

7-8.30am in the mornings.
Then I set it to come on about an hour before I get home at around 2pm - it'll stay on for probably three hours.

Then very occasionally we have it on in the evenings but not often as our house is well-insulated. I have it set to around 19 degrees.

LifeIsBusy · 08/01/2022 15:35

I have no thermostat .. just a coal fire and associated pump. If it's cold more coal goes in the fire... If not ... Leave it

I do the same heating is on low 24hours. Then during the day I'll light a stove which keeps everything cosy. It's miserable being cold. Heat is high up my priority list I'd much rather be warm than skimp on heating and save up for a holiday or anything I'd consider non essential.
TooMuchSugar22 · 08/01/2022 15:36

Today all day in fact most of week it's been on all day and night to 21. Its so draughty this house so after 30 min it being off it can easily drop a degree or 2.

TooMuchSugar22 · 08/01/2022 15:37

I turned it off the other night when we went to bed. Themo was reading 21.3
Got up in the morning before it kicked in as ds woke. It was 13.9! And it wasn't even really really cold outside. It was 4 degrees that night

Singinghollybob · 08/01/2022 16:38

At the moment, when we're home we have the heating on and turn it off when we go to bed

Mydogisagentleman · 08/01/2022 16:45

5am to 7, I get up at 5.45 and loathe getting in the shower when it’s chilly.
Comes on about 14.30 so it’s warm when I get home from work

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 08/01/2022 16:48

I always make sure I never live in an open plan home. All of my houses over the years have been smallish individual rooms then you just heat the room you are in.
My living room is shut off from the rest of the house so I can either have the woodburner on or a heater and be toasty at all times.
This is the problem with big open plan spaces - they are freezing for what in this country is most of the year.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 08/01/2022 16:50

I also have big heavy curtains, draught excluders, blankets on the sofas, all the doors are curtained off too. It makes a huge difference and my heating bills remain very low.

insancerre · 08/01/2022 16:51

6-8am
12-2 pm
6-10pm
But if we are cold we can boost it and it will come on

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 08/01/2022 16:54

I pop mine on when I get up. The thermo thing is portable so I leave it by my bed to put on when I wake up. Leave it on for an hour maybe. I try and keep busy during the day. But maybe on for another hour at lunch time if I’m home. Then maybe a bit in the evening.

If I’m sitting down I tend to just use a hot water bottle. But I have a smart metre and try to keep the gas below £5 a day

XingMing · 08/01/2022 16:55

6-8.30 am and 4 - 9pm. Heat pump in the kitchen for days, and the wood-burner gets lit about 7.00pm, or during the afternoon at weekends.

bigredbag · 08/01/2022 16:58

@Paranoidandroidmarvin a portable thermostat now that's a dream. We are in an oil fired old house, probably asking to be cold living here to be fair!

hollyivysaurus · 08/01/2022 17:00

We have the thermostat at 17 at night, and have it up to 20 in the day (we turn it down if we go out, but DH works from home now). I hate being cold so I’m very pro heating!!

rainbowplease · 08/01/2022 17:04

Our thermostat is set to 22 then whenever I'm cold I'll turn it up to 24 or 25. I hate being cold.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 08/01/2022 17:06

6-7am and then 5 - 8 in the week

7 - 8am and then 4 - 8 at the weekend. If really cold it'll go on for an hour at about 1pm too

ImFree2doasiwant · 08/01/2022 17:08

I don't usually have mine on much, but being at hone more (also old, cold, draughty oil CH house) I've been having it on much more. 2 young DC abd if i dobt have it on low all day, it is permanently cold. It took until lunchtime to reach 17.5 from 15.5 this morning

Thermostat is at 18 or 19.
