What times do you put your central heating on for

Trying to work out what times to put out radiators on, dh doesn't approve of my times 😂 we have a big draughty house and I'm just so cold today. It's wet and horrible and I just want to be warm. I am walking around in my coat and it's just not fun to be this way.

7-9am and 4-8pm but we often have the fire on in the living room at other times.

OhGiveUp · 08/01/2022 17:14

Mine is on 24/7 as it's a parkray ( coal fire ) system, so while ever the fire is lit, the central heating is on.

Fuzzywuzzyface · 08/01/2022 17:14

At weekends or home all day it is on all day and turns off at 10pm. During work week it goes on 0600 - 0730 and comes on at 1645 - 2200.
I can't stand being cold and temp is set at about 21° Grin

BigSandyBalls2015 · 08/01/2022 17:15

All day on 18/19, turned down to 14 at night and it did kick in the other night when it was -3 outside.

I couldn’t be wearing a coat indoors! Sounds miserable.

cloudtree · 08/01/2022 17:25

During the day it depends on when the house is cold but in the evening I always turn it off at 8.30 at the latest otherwise the house is too warm for sleeping.

ParkheadParadise · 08/01/2022 17:31

24hrs a day in winter.
I like to wear a t-shirt around the house.
I can't stand a cold house. The thermostat is usually at 22 during the day.

SamMil · 08/01/2022 17:35

We don't have a timer. We just have the thermostat set to the temperature we prefer.

It is a heat pump though and modern, well-insulated house.

CharSiu · 08/01/2022 17:36

The thermostat is set at 19.5 from 8am till 10pm and then overnight it’s on a setting of 12. In all the 20 years I think it’s kicked in twice overnight.

Kite22 · 08/01/2022 17:49

The new boiler we had installed 2 or 3 years ago allows me to set it at different times at different temperatures, so, it is on 19 from 30mins before getting up time, but once everyone is up and washed and dressed it only kicks in if drops below 15.5, then we set it for warmer again once people settle to sit in the evening and then reduce it to only coming on if drops below 7 at night, and then next da same again.

Works much better than the old one where we could only set it to be on or off at different times.

InTheLabyrinth · 08/01/2022 18:06

6-7, 11-12, 4-6.30

Boosted as required.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 08/01/2022 18:13

If you have the heating on all day. How high are ur bills! Mine would be enormous

Hollyhead · 08/01/2022 18:15

We just turn it on as required, set to 19 as a target temperature, never at night once we’re in bed though - what a waste!!!

HalloHello · 08/01/2022 18:18

Mine is
0700 - 0900 22' nothing worse than a cold house in the morning!
0900 - 1700 18' but do give it a boost if we feel chilly, although usually all out or pottering about so not too cold!
1700 - 2100 22' cosy evenings are the best!
2100-0700 only comes on of house gets down to 10'!

Purplewithred · 08/01/2022 18:20

DH works shifts and likes a warm house (thank goodness) so all the time - overnight set to 17 degrees, daytime set to 22. But we have Tado so it automatically turns the heating off when there is nobody home (unless DH leaves his phone at home to keep the house warm for the cats)

autumnboys · 08/01/2022 18:22

I think it comes on around 5.30/6am and goes off at 7.30am.

If DH is working from home, he lights the wood burner around lunch time. Otherwise, I do it when I get home. If my Mum’s coming round, we put it on, she hates being cold.

We were hit by Avro going down when we owed them money and it taking forever to switch over to Octopus. We are about £400 in debit between the two and keen to reduce that as much as possible before the energy price cap rises.

Shmithecat2 · 08/01/2022 18:22

Mine is currently set to come on at 22°c, anytime.

SockFluffInTheBath · 08/01/2022 18:23

6-7:30am and 4-7pm. If we’re in the house during the day and it’s cold we’ll pop in on for an extra hour.

ParkheadParadise · 08/01/2022 18:25

We are £325.00 a Month DD for a 5bed house. It's recently went up from £275
NoWordForFluffy · 08/01/2022 18:30

It depends on the weather...we've had 'feels like' minus temps for most of this week, so it's set 05.30-07.30, 9-10, 11.30-12.30, 2-3, 4-5 and 6-7. This stops it dropping too low, but is more economical than having it on for the whole day.

DH is going to speak with the gas engineer who lives opposite to see about a retrofit remote room thermostat. I'll do it differently once we have that.

ISpyCobraKai · 08/01/2022 22:40

I have mine on all day and night on prepayment meters and its around £160 a month.

tillyandmilly · 08/01/2022 22:45

Rainbowplease - my gawd I would be sweltering at 24-25 degrees ! 🥵 we have ours on at 19 degrees and even then I get a headache - rather layer up than turn heating on especially now as fuel prices are sky rocketing!

womaninatightspot · 08/01/2022 22:56

It's tricky as I have an oil boiler so pay to fill the tank rather than a monthly bill. I put 500L in at end of November at £297, that'd probably get me to mid feb but I'll top up end of January. So £150m a month tops in winter.
Mrsdoubtfireswig · 08/01/2022 22:56

Wfh during the week and weekends
6am - 10am
1pm - 2pm
5pm - 7pm

But I do turn off if I can and wear extra jumpers etc. Sometimes have an hour 9-10pm if watching tv downstairs

UnbelievableAlien · 08/01/2022 23:21

Gosh some of these comments make me despair. ‘24/25 degrees’ ‘on 24 hours a day’ ‘like to be in a T-shirt’.
Climate crisis anyone Sad.
I try and keep it to an hour or 2 morning and the same evening. We use other ways of keeping warm and aren’t cold. Layers, warm clothes and snuggly blankets go a long way. It’s not miserable, it’s cosy.

ponkydonkey · 08/01/2022 23:34

6- 9.30am

4.30 - 11pm

18.5 degrees
