What times do you put your central heating on for

Trying to work out what times to put out radiators on, dh doesn't approve of my times 😂 we have a big draughty house and I'm just so cold today. It's wet and horrible and I just want to be warm. I am walking around in my coat and it's just not fun to be this way.

5-8am, 2-5pm, 9-10pm the house keeps heat in really well so only needs top ups fo keep warm

TheCatShatInTheHat · 08/01/2022 23:51

I don't have ours set. We put it on when really cold. About 5 times this winter so far. I'm always warm, the others all work outside the home.
£46 a month for gas.

I'm still sleeping under a sheet and blanket. Duvet not needed yet.

whereareyousleep · 08/01/2022 23:56

6-7.30am then 4-7.30pm last few days I've been turning it on more as it's been below freezing outside. We have a very cold house needs new windows drop to 14ish overnight.

notacooldad · 08/01/2022 23:59

We pit in as needed. It's not been on for the last few days.

HoobleDooble · 09/01/2022 00:11

Mine's permanently on with the thermostat set at 18-20. I'm on prepayment meters and put £50 on each (gas & electric) on payday every month. During the summer we use next to bugger all on the gas so the credit builds up then, in winter when the heating clicks on, it doesn't come as a financial shock!

PattyPan · 09/01/2022 00:32

We don’t have a programmable thermostat so we just have it set to 15 most of the time and then when we wake up we turn it to 18 and again in the evening when DP gets home. I turn it back down to 16 when he’s out although I am home all day as I just put on layers. We also turn it up when one of us wants a shower as I do stipulate a minimum bathroom temperature of 13C to take my clothes off and the bathroom gets much colder than the rest of the house (rubbish extension). The budget on my smart meter is set to £1 a day for each of gas and electricity, can’t imagine spending £5 a day on gas like pp! 😱

PattyPan · 09/01/2022 00:36

For our last bill (27 Nov-26 Dec) our gas bill was £26.93! And £25.41 on electricity. I know it was mild weather then but still. MN threads about heating blow my mind every time about how much everyone else seems to spend.

karalime · 09/01/2022 00:47

I got a Hive a few months ago and set it to 18C between 8am-11pm.

I pay £35 for a 2 bed maisonette with terrible insulation. Even before that I would have the heating on low constantly during the winter. I've never been convinced that turning the heating on and off constantly saves money, just seems like a way to be cold, miserable and waste money.

Titsywoo · 09/01/2022 00:50

During the week 5-7am then 3-10pm (it tends to get to temp quickly and doesn't really drop after that so the heating itself is probably only on for an hour or two in 24 hours.

rainbowplease · 09/01/2022 01:04

@tillyandmilly in my defence I do have anaemia so feel the cold easily.

We pay about £280/ month, quite a large detached house though.

RoseMartha · 09/01/2022 01:06

6-7am
3-7pm

Set at 20degrees

It is a generally warm home and doesnt always come on both times unless really cold.

My old home was much colder.

If it gets cold in the day and I am wfh i make a microwave beanie heat pad thing or hot water bottle if I am making a hot drink at the same time. And get an extra layer on.
If I am home and not working i dont sit down long enough to get cold.

Veuvelily · 09/01/2022 01:15

Becer use the timer in this house, Just use the thermostats.I have a thermostat on each floor(3)

Floralnomad · 09/01/2022 01:19

Ours is on 24/7 we just adjust the thermostat as required . It gets turned down to 16 overnight and the heating rarely comes on as it’s generally a warm well insulated house .

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 09/01/2022 02:46

stopped using the timer now

we just put on the heat when it starts to get colder usually 4pm to 10pm at about 17degrees and then 19 but turn it down if it gets too stuffy.

if it is forecast to freeze overnight we keep it on but turned down to 10degrees just to save the pipes.

blankets and hot water bottles here though for immediate body heat

Window vents and thick curtains really helped getting rid of cold condensing windows and improving heat circulation - massive improvement.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 09/01/2022 02:49

pps. we only put it on in the morning just about 16 if its raining outside - but thats just to stop the feeling of damp in the fabric of the brickwork.

Once its at an ambient temp - off it goes.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 09/01/2022 02:50

bill was 125 last month but it's capped till November

Runnerduck34 · 09/01/2022 09:43

When we were all out work or school, it came on at 6.30am ,went off at 8.30am, back on at 4pm off at 9pm but often switched back on for at least another hour as house got cold!.
Now we are WFH its on 6.30am-10pm and controlled by thermostat, so only switch it off over night.
When it warms up in late spring we turn it off completely until September ish, depending on weather, but will put it back o if we get cold. Basically if your in the house and cold put it on!

Rosielil · 09/01/2022 10:09

About 40 mins mornings and same evenings. Give it a rare 1 hr during day if needed. Aga in kitchen but rest of house is cold. Put 1,000 litres oil (£480) in the week before Christmas and have used just over half, according to watchman. Guessing we’ll get 5/6 weeks from this fill. Aga drinks it. Would love to have it on longer as hate feeling cold and can often be found with a hot water bottle.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 09/01/2022 10:38

5.00am-7.30am (we've usually all left the house by 7.40 tops).

3.15pm-4.15pm. Nice and warm for the kids after school.
Both on at 20 degrees.

We've all got an electric throw/hot water bottles/ oodies so try hard to use them before boosting the heating. I'll never put the heating on if it's just me home. Sadly can't afford it. I layer up and go for extra long dog walks instead. Doggie loves to lay on me on the heated throw so she's an extra heater!. We're pre-payment and the prices are sky high.

Faultymain5 · 09/01/2022 10:55

5-8 (I'm an early riser) 12-3pm. 7=9p.m.
Before the pandemic it was 5-8, 6-9 when we got home.

That said we have been known to leave it on all day, and it only comes on when it gets to a particular temperature.
