Out of date food that doesn't seem to go out of date?

Bagels! Just had one that went OOD on 1st Jan and it's as fresh as the day we bought it.

Also cream, you get at least a week or two before you might not consider it.
Yoghurts, definitely a month or two.
Condiments - use within X days? They last for months in this house.

Anything else?

No idea,. I don't pay any attention to dates, eyes and nose will tell you and if those fail tastebuds are a good back up Grin

DroopyClematis · 08/01/2022 14:16

Yep, eyes and nose here.

Took me a long time to trust myself but I'm pretty confident with what can be eaten.
I only chuck seafood out if it's out of date.

As an aside, I am finding that the shelf life of lots of produce is much shorter these days.

Best before I think means exactly that, not necessarily off or bad for you, just not at its best. Much food, especially diary, is in sterile packing so unopened will last a lot longer than stated.

Eggs (up to a point!). They last much much longer than the dates would have you believe.

Also bacon and cheese.

Dates printed on food are useful to indicate the order in which things should be used, it makes sense to use the oldest first.

My eyes and nose are my only reliable guides to whether food is fit to eat.

FinallyHere · 08/01/2022 14:42

Oh, and the float test for eggs before cracking them open.

RJnomore1 · 08/01/2022 14:44

Most fruit and veg

Tbh the only things I stick to use by on is chicken, pork and seafood.

WorraLiberty · 08/01/2022 14:44

Smoked gammon joints.

I have one in the fridge that's 5 days out of date and it looks/smells perfect.

We'll be having it for dinner tomorrow.

LizBennet · 08/01/2022 14:46

Mustard. Had some with dinner the other night and then realised it was a year out of date 😳

OhWhyNot · 08/01/2022 14:47

Broccoli

Cheese and yoghurts

And often bread

Bagels! Just had one that went OOD on 1st Jan and it's as fresh as the day we bought it.

I did smile, bagels come out of the factory stale!
