Has anyone had a undiagnosed molar pregnancy? And informed months later? In september I went for my first scan and was told their heart stopped beating 2 weeks before at 8weeks old. I had surgery after this and grieved my baby. Boxing day I found out I am pregnant again, today the hospital calls telling me I need to go in as it was a Molar pregnancy. I told them I am pregnant they used the word cancer and I am scared. I need help understanding why I am only just finding out and what it means for my baby if the tissue has grown as it says not to concieve until safe?

Sorry to hear this, I had a molar pregnancy 6 months ago.

Just to clarify was your previous pregnancy molar or your current?

caprimoon · 06/01/2022 22:25

I've reread your post, I was advised not to get pregnant for 6 months so I could be monitored. They will be calling you in to check everything is ok,

Op, it sounds like you had a partial molar pregnancy in your September miscarriage. I had one, and it sounds possible you are having a similar experience to me. Obviously, I can’t be sure, but the initial reaction is fear, so I will say what is possible to try to help.
If you saw the heartbeat, then later miscarried it’s possible that it wasn’t a complete molar pregnancy but a partial, where the baby grows alongside the molar placenta. However, sadly they are unable to grow to term due to abnormalities, and results in a miscarriage. If you then had a surgical management, as I did, the abnormalities are discovered when the products of conception go to the lab. If it’s a partial or complete molar pregnancy one of the possible complications is that there is a risk, that if everything hasn’t come away or been removed that it can mean further treatment is necessary, usually as another d and c , but rarely it can result in disease similar to cancer that needs treatment. However, the chances of this are really low, so please don’t panic. If you saw a baby with heartbeat it must be a partial molar not complete. Did you have a period afterwards and before this bfp? If so, that’s a really good sign that your hcg levels returned to normal and this pregnancy is an entirely new one. If not, that’s why they want to be sure that this is a new pregnancy and not any complications from the first. If necessary what would usually happen is you would be referred to a hospital, Sheffield in the north, and do weekly to fortnightly then monthly urine tests to monitor the hcg levels. For this reason they advise not to conceive during this time. For me, I think it was around 12 months but can be less I think. If you think this is a brand new pregnancy they will scan to check you and probably monitor the hcg levels. If so, you are not at a much increased risk of it happening again, or maybe not any, I can’t remember that bit clearly. It really is a stressful time, and a huge shock so please be gentle with yourself and seek better advice than I can give from your hospital consultant.
Sorry about the miscarriage 💐 and good luck with the new pregnancy being straightforward x

I'm confused, your last pregnancy was a molar pregnancy and you have only just found out now? Which coincides with you being pregnant again?

I know with Molar pregnancies some of the tissues need to be examined to check for cancerous cells.

IncessantNameChanger · 06/01/2022 22:56

Did you have a period and negative pg tests in between?

Sorry I wrote this in a panic so abit confusing, yes my previous in September was a Molar pregnancy (discovered yesterday) when they rang they did not know I was now pregnant again. I am terrified its just a growth of hormone tissue (although yes I had one period and was following flow to concieve again) unaware of it being a previous molar. If I am actually pregnant and need another D&C I then lose this "real baby" or is there other ways? I was very angry when reading up that its discovered on the scan and why I didnt know until now and could potentially have tumours growing in my womb. I am going in at 12 and will know whats next from there, Thanks everyone feel abit more prepared now x

Good luck. This is not acceptable.

gluenotsoup · 07/01/2022 10:05

No, you won’t have to lose this baby! It will have been a partial molar, as there is no foetus with a complete molar. The only way they can tell with a partial is by testing the products if conception from the miscarriage.
You have had a normal period, showing your hormone levels will have returned to normal and conceived again. If you hadn’t had a normal period, that’s when to worry.
A full molar shows on a scan, as it can appear like a bunch of grapes, but doesn’t on a partial molar, so don’t be angry. They are probably doing everything they can x

gluenotsoup · 07/01/2022 10:10

Also, the path labs will be incredibly snowed under with the effects of Covid and will be prioritising what they know to be potentially cancerous samples. If there was no reason to suspect a partial or full molar from your miscarriage then unfortunately yours will have been a routine sample, hence the delay. I know it’s probably not much comfort, but they won’t have been negligent.

gluenotsoup · 07/01/2022 17:32

Hope all went well for you today x

Hello your words have helped greatly in not feeling alone. The doctor was on the same boat as me really but very very apolagetic its taken so long, he was unaware I am now pregnant (I had said to lady on the phone) and says 'oh this complicates things alot' and it's a specialist matter but did say my negative tests after are a good sign. I was then scanned to see the baby and told she can't see anything in the sac but it could be too early so booked for another on friday. There was a big shadow above the sac she wants investigating. I said they dropped the 'cancer bomb' over the phone and she is complaining for me. Waiting game begins..

It’s perhaps just too early if you only had bfp recently. Another week and more should be visible, hopefully a strong hb.
Just take it that all is well until you are told otherwise. Keep updating, I’ll look out for them x

I'll be looking for your updates op.

Hopefully by Friday you will be able to see a lovely strong heartbeat.
