Baby losing loads of hair, very patchy

My baby is 13 weeks old and his hair is so patchy. He had a lovely head of hair when he was born but it has gradually got less and less. Looking at him from the front he looks bald. He does hair hair at the back and sides but it is so patchy. Tonight I noticed his sheet was covered in hair too, it has only been on 2 nights. Is there a reason for this, it seems excessive? Is it normal? It seems to have got a lot worse the last few days. I'll add pictures of his hair too.

(Tummy time fail, we didn't leave him like obviously, I was taking a video while his dad was supervising) but just to add another picture) hope someone can help.

Aww beautiful. ❤ congratulations new Mummy.

Its all perfectly normal, it'll grow back quickly and won't be patchy.

Yes this is normal, babies tend to lose hair. Especially at the back where the head rests

It’s a very normal thing to happen. Mine lost what little hair she had in the first few months, and was a bald baby for ages. Friends’ babies had the same happen, although their babies’ hair grew back quicker.

I think it is normal. Both of mine were born with lots of dark hair but then rocked the monk/old man bald on top look for a few months until their hair grew back in blond.

Exhausted18 · 06/01/2022 21:13

Totally normal. It will grow back. Sometimes it grows back a whole different colour Grin.

This happened to my eldest DS - he had a lovely lot of hair when he was born, MIL took one look and said "that will all fall out" - it was like she cursed him because she was absolutely right, he was bald by 3 months. It eventually grew back, by about a year he had hair again and it's totally normal now. I had never heard of it happening, and it didn't to my younger children but apparently it's v common in DH's family, I think it just happens to some babies but isn't necessarily a sign of anything wrong - check with your health visitor if you're worried though.

I'm no expert but my son after being born with a head of brunette hair also had hair loss, he looked like William Hague for some time as a result. Anyway, it grew back blonde after a few months. No idea what it was about but my son is a healthy and bouncy 11 month old now with no issues at all! And a head of fine blonde hair most unlike the dark head of hair he was born with!!

EatDrinkEatDrink · 06/01/2022 21:15

Completely normal, all 3 of my children were born with dark hair, this came out (some point in the first few months) just like the pictures you posted and then grew back lighter.

Aquamarine1029 · 06/01/2022 21:15

Totally normal. My son was born with wispy brown hair. After a month or so it fell out, replaced with ginger hair. That lasted a couple of months, fell out and was then blond. He's 24 now and still blond.

Dollywilde · 06/01/2022 21:16

Yep, as others have said! DD was born with masses of black hair annoyingly as it bore out my mother in law’s prediction after I had terrible heartburn Grin it all fell out around the 3 month mark but by the time she was a year she was all golden curls!

AgrippinaT · 06/01/2022 21:16

So cute. And perfectly normal!!

Happened to all 3 of mine.

cherrycoke7 · 06/01/2022 21:16

Phew, thank you! He definitely looks like a monk bless him, we of course still think he's so bloody handsome though Grin I was worried as a few friends' babies have full heads of hair still that haven't gone patchy/fell out so that's all I had to compare it to.

100% normal and nothing to worry about

Danikm151 · 06/01/2022 21:17

Totally normal

I miss my son’s little werewolf ears 😂

Georgeskitchen · 06/01/2022 21:31

Yes it rubs off when they are laying down. It will come back 😍🥰

Dollywilde · 07/01/2022 08:47

I wonder if it’s connected to cradle cap? DD had quite bad cradle cap and I think the hair came away as the flakes of skin came off. Maybe that explains why some babies lose hair and some don’t?

A580Hojas · 07/01/2022 08:56

Oh look at him! I just want to sniff his little baby head!

ConstanceL · 07/01/2022 09:06

Congrats on your new baby! Yes completely normal, my eldest was born with a head of black hair, it all fell out and grew back a kind of chestnut brown.
