Anyone know anything about Audi gearboxes

Slightly in shock although no one has died, so will get a grip. 47k on the clock of our Audi A3 (fancy gearbox - I forget the name). Just been quoted 1200 to strip it down to find the issue; potential cost of 3k the mend it is to problem A; potentially 7k to mend if more serious. Have stopped feeling giddy and panicked but has anyone successfully chased Audi for an issue outside warranty. Advice and general join8ng in with cursing cars much appreciated.

Is it a DSG? What's wrong with it? My dad's A3 was being a bit hesitant and Audi just had to reset and reprogramme it.
What would a new one cost? Could you get one from a breakers yard and have that put in?

Burnt0utMum · 06/01/2022 17:06

What year is the car? Automatic or manual?

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 06/01/2022 17:13

It’s an automatic think 5 years old and has s-tronic gearbox. Thanks for any advice

They’ve said a pump and a switch may need replacing but that’s the 3k repair. A rebuild will be 7k, but my dh took it to a main dealer so we need to find a specialist in east Anglia I think.

Yes that's the DSG.

Shade17 · 06/01/2022 17:32

Depending on year and type, some VAG DSG gearboxes are notoriously shit and expensive to fix

Shade17 · 06/01/2022 17:47

I think this is your gearbox:

Do any of the symptoms fit? Might be worth talking over with these guys before you chuck a load of cash at a main dealer.

Tulips21 · 06/01/2022 17:54

Not an Audi but We had a kia 4x4, still on finance but out of warrenty...
The engine failed.
5k to replace with new...
Car is worth 4.5k.
As still on finance - We've had to keep paying and watch it rot away infront of it-
I honestly cried quite a bit- not just the unfairness of it all but I loved that car!

Maybe get a few more quotes from an independent garage and possibly a breakers yard?

Freddofan · 06/01/2022 18:11

Is the quote from a franchised Dealer or a private garage. It might be worth asking a dealer as they may be able to link it to their computer/analyser and see more than someone with a generic system

Ethelfromnumber73 · 06/01/2022 18:17

Is it a tiptronic gearbox? If so, that's what killed my A4 (and my Dad's, and my friend's). However, they had all done a lot more miles than yours

KirstenBlest · 06/01/2022 18:20

Ask on NextDoor for a recommended independent garage.

TenPenceMix · 06/01/2022 20:13

Definitely get a quote from an independent garage!

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 06/01/2022 20:17

Thanks all for the solidarity and advice. Busy looking through the used Audi warranty as I think we might be covered. Bastard bloody car!

www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/
Check if it's a recall job OP just put your registration in.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 06/01/2022 20:33

Even if it isn't covered you might get a contribution out of Audi as it shouldn't be broken after 47,000 miles.

LondonQueen · 06/01/2022 20:55

Yes, DSG gearboxes in the VAG group are notorious for issues like this. If it's an older car it might be worth looking at an upgrade.

Currently concocting a several stage battle plan…lots of phone calls ahead I think.

If anyone ever checks back, thanks for the advice on Audi - they’ve covered all but 650 quid of the 7 grand bill!!!! So relieved!

Jeez! A full rebuild then? Happy for you op!
