Ubiquitous TV/film personalities

I get really frustrated when the same few "stars" get wheeled out again and again to the point where you just become sick of the sight of them even if you quite liked them originally.

It happened with Tony Slattery many years ago (not a happy ending) and also Caròl Vorderman.

Nowadays I can't seem to go a day without seeing Romesh Ranganathan, Tom Allen, Dr Michael fucking Moseley and even, God love her, Olivia Coleman.

Who else is over exposed? I'd love to see some more actors and presenters getting a share of the work but producers/casting directors just seem so unimaginative.

Every actress that has ever been on Corrie seems to be in everything - not complaining, I'm actually proud of how well they have done after soapysoapland.

Nestlyn · 07/01/2022 04:30

Julie Walters seemed to be in every film over Christmas.

Wincarnis · 07/01/2022 04:58

Paddy McGuinness
Reverend Kate
Jay Blades

Deathraystare · 07/01/2022 07:37

Well be thankful we don't have wall to wall Mylene Klass at the moment.

DroopyClematis · 07/01/2022 08:19

Agree with Rylan and Tom Allen.

Same as others re Olivia Colman . Love her to bits but she's been in so much of late and so I've begun to notice that her acting doesn't, dare I say, have much range.

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 11:32

Is it that we don’t think these people should be in film/tv at all? Or just give us a break for a bit?
Presumably they are getting all the jobs because they are good at what they do?

A580Hojas · 07/01/2022 13:04

It's that we think (or certainly I think) that too few celebs get too many of the jobs available. It gets very tiresome seeing the same people over and over again, regardless of their talent or popular appeal.

I watch a lot less TV these days but for me it's tiresome to see the same old formats over and over.

SCD needs a complete shake up and a presenter/judge cull and replacement.
This Morning-that's the same every single day, you could just watch the same episode.
Saturday Night Takeaway-time to get rid, the last series was dire.
The One Show-Always been completely WTF and unwatchable. Seems to be Ronan Keating presenting at the moment.

Maybe people like their shows and presenters like a pair of old comfy slippers and don't like change?!

I m currently enjoying Steph's Packed lunch which is quite good. I know some of the presenters but not all.

TonTonMacoute · 07/01/2022 14:34

Stephen sodding Graham, I like the guy, he's a good actor but does he have to be in everything!?

Joanne Froggatt also pops up a lot, usually playing exactly the same role!

AmyDudley · 07/01/2022 15:38

I don;t think these people are necessarily terrible (although Gregg Wallace is just a creepy bald bloke) and some of them I quite like - Rylan is a bit ubiquitous but I think he's a pretty good live presenter which is a fairly skilled type of presenting.

Its just as OP says same few people seen too often. And some of them seem to have no particular skill set - Kate the vicar - she's pleasant enough but why is she on telly surely her job is vicaring (ditto the rev Richard) I don't really want to see these people dance or cook or name that tune. Dr Ranj is on every quiz going (and show little or no ability at quizzes) OK its for charity, but actually its for public profile, lets not be naive.
Bradley walsh is not a great actor - he's very average, I'm sure there are loads better people who could be chosen for roles. Its choosing people who are supposedly 'popular' and sticking them in any old format/game show/reality shit because they are essentially bland and innoffensive. But sometimes it would be nice to see someone a bit different.

And yes there are certain go to actors for particular roles. James Nesbitt used to be in everything, he seems to have disappeared a bit now (maybe he got sick of getting the same roles).

I think if you are getting the same old faces for every 'celeb' reality show/quiz then it means there are too many reality shows/quizzes. Maybe BBC should think about putting some of the license fee towards quality drama instead of cheap filler

That's the point, really. It would be nice for other people to get the opportunity to be on these shows, I'm tired of seeing the same people all the time.
Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 16:24

Which ‘other people’ does everyone want on the tv?

Badnightguaranteed · 07/01/2022 16:28

Ah yeah all these channel 4 comedian types who are painful to watch. Jon (John?)Richardson & co and all their comedy friends.

Maireas · 07/01/2022 16:30

Maybe some unknowns? Some people given a break?
Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 16:41

I suggested that on a SCD thread @Maireas to replace the awful TD. But no, everyone was appalled at the idea. I think people like familiar basically. Shame.

AmyDudley · 07/01/2022 16:51

I think people do like familiarity to some extent and i think in a family show that's been on for years people do like familiar faces. I'm not a big fan of TD - I think others could probably do a better job, but to be fair to her she's only on Strictly - she's not cropping up on every other show on the BBC. We don't have to watch her cook an omelette or spin round in a wheel or display her general knowledge. (I obviously realise we don't HAVE to watch anyone do these things and I go for the off button, but some people due to circumstance end up watching quite a lot of TV and maybe they'd like to see some different faces, rather than have Gregg Wallace et al gawping at them)

As for who would we like to see - some new people, fresh faces. At the moment it seems like people go on a reality show, like love Island, and become a z lister, then start appearing on all the other reality shows, and we have them learning to dance or sing or ice skate or cook or whatever - I'm all for recycling but watching Tiffany from 'Fuck me on the Beach' learn how to roller blade is not going to save the planet.

PuppyMonkey · 07/01/2022 16:52

There’s a definite overkill thing going on with Bradley Walsh at the moment.

I guess it’s just that once a TV executive thinks someone is popular they think “right we’ll get them as we want our show to be popular,” it’s how showbiz/Hollywood/telly has always worked to be fair.

They don’t stop to think people will start moaning “that bloody Marilyn Monroe, she’s in everything.” Grin

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 16:55

I watch SCD on catch up and watch the dancing and the judges comments and that's it, so that way I don't have to put up with TD or CW so there are ways around it. Grin

It is weird to think that the likes of Rylan/Josie Gibson/Alison Hammond etc came from reality shows and actually make pretty good presenters, or at least as good as the people that have done it for years.

Maireas · 07/01/2022 16:58

@Sparklingbrook

I agree with you. I think both SCD presenters have had their time. Some new people, perhaps unknown, perhaps from the dance world, might refresh it and make it more interesting. On another note, I don't know how Claudia Winkleman can justify her £500k salary.
Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 17:01

I think it makes total sense to have someone with a dance background to present the biggest dance show on the Beeb.
I see Janette Manrara is presenting ITT and she's doing ok. Although I did like Zoe Ball for that.

Campfirewood · 07/01/2022 17:08

I agree, How has Richie Anderson ended up everywhere? He has no discernible talent. I feel bad finding him so irritating as he seems like a decent chap. But he had limited talent doing the travel on radio 2, and now he’s a fully fledged presenter.

umpahlumpahstickitupyourjumpah · 07/01/2022 17:12

Ant and Dec (not so much now)
Fearne Cotton
Paul McCartney

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 17:17

I haven’t seen Paul McCartney for ages. There were some weird threads on here about The Beatles but other than that?

IDontHaveThePelvisForAFuton · 07/01/2022 17:51

Oh yes. I can't wait for the new Joanne Frogget oppressed/ abused/ downtrodden/otherwise miserable woman drama. Not!

Maireas · 08/01/2022 09:50

I was just thinking I'd not seen Paul McCartney for a long time, I wondered if he'd gone into semi retirement.
