How to mend this coat?

He's only had this coat less than a week (before Christmas) and he managed to tear it near the pocket (not along the seam).

(See photo)

It's a slippery fabric so not sure how easy it will be to fix - any tips please?

Honestly, I'd try my luck at exchanging it. Complain there must be something faults with the stitching for it to have lasted only a week. I'm not good at sewing though!

I would also complain as the fabric should be robust enough not to rip by the pocket. However if you don't want to do that you should be able to hand stitch the seam to fix the hole. For the ripped fabric you can buy black iron on patches for under £5 online. That would hide the tear and stop it ripping any more - would not be perfect but would give the coat a bit of a longer use?

Oooch! That material is a bugger for sewing.

If you feel brave you could use this stuff. It will be a bit fiddly, and you might need to go in through the lining (making another hole that you can then sew up - aim for the hems).

Or you couldfind a repair shop/tailor and discuss what kind of repairs are possible from them.

Thanks all! I think I'll give the patching a go - I bought the coat online and he doesn't have another to wear if I send it back. So annoying!
