How much should counselling cost?

I have been quoted £80/session by a counsellor I've previously seen. She used to charge £70, and I thought she was good but didn't feel I could justify the cost really. I'd like to see her again but her fees have gone up to £80.

I live on the outskirts of London. Not the poshest suburb by a long way but it's still basically a pretty middle class area.

Are these fees typical do you think?

Sounds right for a professional as they have overheads and non chargeable time.

I’m about an hour from London and average around here is £50/£60 a session so £80 for London seems reasonable.

It depends a lot of their qualifications (as it, is it general counselling or are they qualified in a specific therapy?).

I would say it's slightly higher than average but if she has lots of work and is experienced then it's perfectly reasonable. Most therapists are self-employed so won't have any holiday or sick pay, and will have lots of overheads to cover.

Seems about right. My friend recently got quoted £100 for couples work.

Is about £100 to £120 an hour where I live.

Omg that's steep!! It's around £40-45 here (North Cornwall) - I couldn't afford it at all if any more than that!

Many places are still doing online/telephone counseling, would reaching further afield help..?

£75 to £90 ph is the norm in my city.

Out of interest, how do you know she's good? I find it difficult to judge quality. I think the woman I've seen is good but I don't feel blown away either. And £80 per session is a tidy dent in my income. But then I do seem to be having a mid life crisis I need to sort out so I should probably do it.

Look elsewhere, lots of therapists have moved to zoom therapy due to covid. My therapist is £40. I saw him in person until pandemic but now live he’s away and still have sessions.
