Whatever happened to 3D films?

I have no idea why but this popped in to my head that they were bloody everywhere, extra few quid added to the ticket and a pair of cardboard glasses

It’s going to be one of those things we tell our kids we used to do and they won’t believe how old fashioned it sounds

What’s happened to them? Why did they stop? Will they come back?

They were crap. We bought plastic 3D glasses at the cinema because we thought we’d get use out of them. Only worn once. I find them occasionally laughing at me in a drawer. Purchased in 2011- never seen the light of day since.

I was wondering this the other day too!

I wonder if it is the cost of making them + rise of streaming services + decline in cinema numbers = an unfeasible product.

I miss them too, but then, haven't been to the cinema in years, so I may be part of the problem

They were awful to watch, personally I found them really hard to focus on properly and always felt like I wasn't seeing most of what was happening properly. Always tried to avoid seeing them which just meant I went to the cinema less. You're right though, they seem to have drifted out of existence very quietly like blurays

I saw one fairly recently but can’t for the life of me remember what it was.

Remember 3D TVs too?

Lazydaisydaydream · 02/01/2022 22:25

We have a 3d tv!!! Talk about “of the moment” Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/01/2022 22:27

They were a gimmick designed to make money.

I was wondering about 3d tv the other day

Lazydaisydaydream · 02/01/2022 22:34

I watched the Wimbledon finals in 3d when we got our Tv…. Just googled it and that was 2011 Shock I can’t believe it was so long ago. I had the most intense headache afterwards because the mens final was so long. I’m not sure I’ve used the 3d function on the tv since Blush

I know I won't be alone in saying this but they always made me feel really really sick..

Plus for those glasses wearers among us...it's really not a look trying to balance two pairs of glasses on your face..

I suppose they died out because they were a novelty...You'd watch the 3D version then buy the 2D on DVD (as 3D TVs were crazy expensive and barely worked) so people just...saved the few pounds and went for the cheaper option..

They never worked.
It always looked like a flat scene with some parts protruding a little. You never felt as if you were there.

There might have been one scene at the start and maybe another at the closing credits where you really felt like something was moving towards you or going to hit you.

The rest of the time they actually had to tell the story.

So basically a gimmick where there would be a novelty scene at the start and the end of the movie, and it wasnt very obvious for the test of the movie so you'd forget about it for the rest of the movie- if you became immersed in the film.

We went to see a 4dx movie recently at cineworld (3d but also your seats move and there is the feel of rain etc) and 3d has got a lot better, it was more subtle and just felt more like you were in the movie but not in a totally in your face way, it’s hard to explain.
I wear glasses and always hated 3d before but this was actually really surprisingly good
