How the hell can I get the smell of weed out of my house?

We live in a small terrace and I assumed when I bought it that being old the walls would be quite thick. Definitely not the case as we hear a lot of noise from our neighbours (although only one side, the others are clearly more considerate) but the worst part is that they are clearly smoking weed and my house absolutely stinks of it.

I know they can do what they like in their own home but I’m sick of it impacting on mine. I’m reluctant to say anything as I’m here alone a lot and a bit intimidated tbh.

I’m burning a lot of candles and using Febreeze, going to try an air purifier too but is there anything else I can do?

I get you OP! Hate the smell of weed. Rarely need to manage the problem since my soon to be 21 year old moved into own flat. When he visits he puts his trainers in the porch and the smell fills the house. I need to tie them up in a poly bag and put outside, then air porch, wipe with bleach or disinfectant. It could be coming through your windows maybe resealing windows would help.

But to be honest the best idea is to speak to them. Be light touch at forest, maybe try 'I don't know if you've noticed but someone roundabout seems to be using alot of weed. It seeps into my house. In my (or DP' s job we get random drug tested if anyone has a suspicion of drug taking'. The thing is this does happen and it does stick to everything. I know myself I couldn't stand this and would probably call the police which I know others would find OTT. There's no simple way I think either speak to then and feign ignorance it's them or call the police. It will be worse in better weather if they think its tolerated.

Air purifier might help, not that you should have to buy one.

Trainers. Buy large bag of bicarbonate of soda (amazon £5ish I think) fill the trainers with bicarbonate and leave for an hour. I would then put them in w machine on cold wash, with the bicarbonate and no soap but they should be effectively deodorised without that. Weed? Got to change neighbours I'm afraid, no other solution. My flat is in a building that was a hotel for many years and is above the cellar which was previously a nightclub. Although the walls have been replastered, in damp weather like now, the long departed souls of past commercial travellers and revellers make themselves known through ghostly wafts of fags. Come in from outside and it smells like they've had a spectral, smoky gathering while I've been out. Quite odd. No amount of candles, deodorisers, oil burners etc will shift it.

Unfortunately new neighbours aren’t an option, we only bought the house last year and shortly afterwards they bought theirs 🙁

I’m tempted to call the non-emergency police number and ask advice - I doubt they care about personal use even if it’s technically illegal but surely if it’s affecting my space I have a right to - something?

Just bumping - does anyone know if the police would actually care or do anything? I’m guessing probably not 🙁

Following with interest as we have a similar problem. We live in a mid terrace house. Neighbours on the left - no issue, hardly hear them, perfectly lovely. Neighbours on the right up all night, loud music, smoke week outside theory kitchen door and this wafts into our house - I can barely have windows open nor washing hanging outside.

I would get an air purifier and open windows frequently.

I would ring them and talk it over. I have an air purifer as my village gets smoggy with all the bloody woodburners and I have a weak chest. It does work to remove smoke. It was quite expensive but not the most expensive model, it was the best rated by Which at the time we bought it I think.
WoodSageandSeasalt · 03/01/2022 18:57

@ServeBacon it’s a nightmare isn’t it, people can be so inconsiderate 🙁

What’s the attic like? You may have gaps up in loft where air is coming through and helping with the smell. Could be worth having builder come around and advise on any old air block vents to what could be blocked up or changed. Sympathises it is awful. I’m forever having close windows in flats when neighbours use and that’s bad enough.
