Dinnerware that doesn't chip or break easily?

MilduraS · 01/01/2022 22:12

DH pointed out today that almost all of our cheap dinnerware is chipped. I thought he was exaggerating but after having a look through the cupboard there's only one pasta bowl and a side plate that aren't chipped Blush We bought them from Tesco for £20 just under 5 years ago when we moved in together.

Does anyone have any recommendations for hard wearing dinnerware brands? We're happy to splurge on something nice that's going to last longer.

Denby.
Totally indestructible

OhGingleBells · 01/01/2022 22:14

I second Denby!

We've got an ikea square dinner service that seems to be lasting quite well

We have Denby and we are not particularly careful.

It’s amazing, not a mark or a chip.

ParkheadParadise · 01/01/2022 22:17

Denby

WisestIsShe · 01/01/2022 22:18

Our denby is more than 20 years old and still perfect.

dreamygirl25 · 01/01/2022 22:18

Ah where have we gone wrong? We have a chip in our Denby! (bought from a seconds shop tho..)

WellTidy · 01/01/2022 22:18

M&S maxim in plain white. It’s porcelain, really affordable. You can buy the items individually or in sets. Round or square. We’ve had it for maybe ten years now and I could count on one hand the number of things that have broken, and we are quite heavy handed. No cracks at all.

LubaLuca · 01/01/2022 22:19

My previous set of Denby was bombproof. I stupidly replaced it a couple of years ago with another Denby set because I wanted a change after 20 years. It's chipped and marked badly and is nowhere near as tough as my old set Sad

MilduraS · 01/01/2022 22:20

Well that's reassuring! I really like the Denby Halo range but worried about spending that much only to destroy it.

Stoneware is durable

LemonViolet · 01/01/2022 22:22

I love my Le Creuset stoneware. I have a mix of blues, purple and yellow but they do all sorts of colours.

Denby here too . Got about 40 plates from a country auction for the princely sum of a fiver about 4 years ago , and they last forever .

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 01/01/2022 22:22

China (bone China) is thin but strong, and (weirdly) gets stronger with use

Cheap earthenware just chips

Stopsnowing · 01/01/2022 22:23

Denby. I have my parents arabesque pattern from 40 years Ago and not a chip

broccolibush · 01/01/2022 22:23

Another vote for Denby. The only piece we’ve broken in 15 years was a bowl we dropped onto a side plate in the dishwasher - which suggests to me the only thing hard enough to break Denby is Denby. We’ve walloped many a plate into the granite worktop and dropped countless on the floor and they’ve all been fine.

senua · 01/01/2022 22:23

Another vote for Denby. We bought some years ago which are still going strong, as are more recent additions to our collection.

clopper · 01/01/2022 22:23

Denby

Opihr · 01/01/2022 22:23

I got commercial quality tableware from Nisbet's. There's not much choice of patterns etc but for plain white it's good value and seems very solid.

Denby!

Definitely Denby.
Most was bought with Tesco clubcard vouchers or received at Xmas so not too expensive.

Hairyfriend · 01/01/2022 22:37

I used tesco vouchers to get denby plates and bowls a few years ago. Just check the exact width of your cupboards, because my plates were 0.5cm wider than my cabinets!!! No chips though!

Sausagis · 01/01/2022 22:43

Corelle / vitrelle

Common in America but harder to get in the uk. Found some on Amazon. I bloody love it. Hard to break but posher and more proper-plate-like than melamine. It's like half way between melamine and a traditional plate.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 01/01/2022 22:48

Villeroy & Boch - had mine for nearly 40 years.
