Dinnerware that doesn't chip or break easily?

MilduraS · 01/01/2022 22:12

DH pointed out today that almost all of our cheap dinnerware is chipped. I thought he was exaggerating but after having a look through the cupboard there's only one pasta bowl and a side plate that aren't chipped Blush We bought them from Tesco for £20 just under 5 years ago when we moved in together.

Does anyone have any recommendations for hard wearing dinnerware brands? We're happy to splurge on something nice that's going to last longer.

My Midwinter wedding present dinner service is over fifty years old & not a mark or chip anywhere, used all the time.
Buy complete good quality, British vintage china & crockery dinner services & tea sets from auction rooms. Nobody wants them these days so they sell for next to nothing.

I'm going to have to buy melamine, its the only thing that will survive this house.

Has anybody got a view on Denby 1809. Is it robust?

As a student, I bought Denby plates in a charity shop. Thirty five years later they are still going strong!

Enzbear · 02/01/2022 18:35

Denby. Had this set for 10 years and some Denby ovenware in a different range for 25+ years.
I've only had to replace one small dish.

Denby

More Denby love. We're heavy handed and there are chips here and there but used daily for a quarter of a century.

Keith Bruner jones word range. We have a full set of 48 pieces plus some mugs bought 7 years ago and used daily. It is very resilient to getting chipped.

We have midwinter caprice. Wedding present many decades ago as good as new. Went into an antique shop saw a box ful and of it so bought for £60. So I've 12 place settings now. I've topped up broken pieces of bone china that children broke by buying on eBay

Restaurants use Churchill because it's hard-wearing doesn't chip. But ouch the prices.

Redterror · 25/11/2022 18:50

We bought the stuff used by hotels and restaurants. Plain white and it is doing well. Not expensive either.

CherryLongIsland · 25/11/2022 18:54

Denby. I hate it, and would love to replace but it's indestructible despite me being incredibly clumsy.

MrsCarson · 25/11/2022 19:21

I have Corelle it lasts and lasts, it's made it through transatlantic house moves too.

SoMuchToBits · 25/11/2022 19:24

I think the OP might have decided by now, seeing as this thread was started almost 11 months ago! Grin

VerbenaGirl · 25/11/2022 19:25

Denby is the one and only. They often have deals and outlets and as they last so long the earn their keep.

NotMeNoNo · 25/11/2022 20:52

You want the actual stoneware Denby not the "china" ranges. I think the off white (linen?) are most classic. We have a few losses in our 25 year old set but as they keep designs going for years they can always be topped up.

NotMeNoNo · 25/11/2022 20:54

Or something from a catering supplier - Steelite?

Yellowaveo59 · 25/11/2022 20:57

I second @Opihr i have Titan plates they are at least 15 years old and still good as new. They seem to have a rolled edge. Perhaps to make them strong enough for the daily bashing around in a restaurant

OppositeNumber · 25/11/2022 21:02

I don’t like Denby. We have had the same dinner service from Heal’s for around 15 years and it’s suffered loads of abuse and no damage.
