Dinnerware that doesn't chip or break easily?

MilduraS · 01/01/2022 22:12

DH pointed out today that almost all of our cheap dinnerware is chipped. I thought he was exaggerating but after having a look through the cupboard there's only one pasta bowl and a side plate that aren't chipped Blush We bought them from Tesco for £20 just under 5 years ago when we moved in together.

Does anyone have any recommendations for hard wearing dinnerware brands? We're happy to splurge on something nice that's going to last longer.

I've never understood the love for denby - I remember stoneware from my childhood - nails on a chalk board!! 😬

dinosaurcookie · 02/01/2022 02:20

I dropped a denby bowl on the porcelain tile floor and I couldn't believe it didn't break! Very good value if you have clubcard vouchers as previous posters have said.

ConsuelaHammock · 02/01/2022 02:22

Denby. Buy in the sales direct. You can use Tesco vouchers and cashback websites too . I’ve had some fab deals this way.

Corelle. You can get them quite cheaply from Indian shops / cash and carry’s because they are the dinnerware sets of choice for Indian expats in the UK.

Nearlyadoctor · 02/01/2022 09:07

Another vote for Denby, we’ve had our 18 years now and not a chip on any of it.

dangermouseisace · 02/01/2022 09:08

I’ve got Denby but it’s not indestructible. It is better than anything else I’ve had, but not dangermouseisace proof. The dog knocked a side plate down the (carpeted) stairs yesterday and it bounced all the way down though, so yeah, I suppose that’s a result?

Orchid876 · 02/01/2022 09:18

I agree, get the proper Denby with the pattern, not white China. We got both as part of wedding presents, and the patterned Denny has faired much better. Our Denby china plates have done well, but the china bowls are almost all chipped.

Franca123 · 02/01/2022 09:20

Denby. I couldn't tell you how many decades old my parents is. Mine have zero damage after 5 years. Worth every penny.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 02/01/2022 09:25

@MilduraS

Well that's reassuring! I really like the Denby Halo range but worried about spending that much only to destroy it.
I don’t think it’s possible to destroy Denby. I have around 40 pieces and not one of them has chipped.

If you have a Tesco club card you can triple your points to spend with them online. I once used 7 months of points + £50 and bought a set of 6 plates, starter plates and bowls as a wedding gift.

Tinkles78 · 02/01/2022 09:40

Another vote for Denby! We are extremely rough with ours and like a PP the only thing that's chipped is a bowl from a seconds store, everything else is fine!

PomegranateSeed · 02/01/2022 09:43

We got white Denby for our wedding 20 plus years ago. It was awful. We got rid of it after about 5 because it was so chipped. Avoid that and go for stonewear.

PomegranateSeed · 02/01/2022 09:44

Stoneware

userisi2 · 02/01/2022 09:58

I've had two sets from Next for over a decade, both are as good as new, survived young children!

Pearbear · 02/01/2022 10:22

I have Cornishware and it’s very hard wearing. It’s pricey like Denby but I’ve bought it all in the sale. If you like stripes and products that are made in the UK then it’s worth taking a look at.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/01/2022 10:25

My Mum’s M and S dinner set is uncracked and unchipped 40 years after purchase. In fact most of my plates are over 15 years old (and range from Woolies to Asda), none are chipped/cracked.
How are your plates getting damaged?

LoannaJumley · 02/01/2022 10:35

Our Denby is over 30 years old and still like new and I'm really clumsy.

Ariela · 02/01/2022 10:50

Denby. Mine is 1983. I've lost a few plates and bowls more recently, cracked apart, they don't chip and often survive being dropped, not bad when they've been in daily constant use for almost 40 years.
I did break the handle off what I thought was unbreakable Denby Craftsman mug just before Christmas - it landed on the handle, having dropped it masses of times before without any issue.
Luckily there is a great secondhand market flourishing, so DD1 managed to find the exact same one secondhand for me

PanicBuyingSprouts · 02/01/2022 10:53

Another vote for Sophie Conrad at Portmeirion.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 02/01/2022 10:53

*Conran!

MilduraS · 02/01/2022 11:00

Thanks so much for all the options. Think I'll take a chance with the Denby but not the seconds. Gutted that we no longer shop at Tesco and can't use club card points!

I'm not sure how our current set has ended up chipped. We don't have a dishwasher and DH always does the washing up. He's a bit heavy handed and clumsy so I could well imagine they get knocked together when wet and slippy. Annoying but not quite annoying enough for me to say something or take on the washing up myself!

I have a friend who has really beautiful china. She buy it all cheaply from charity shops and just uses it as her everyday stuff. Lots of mis matched china, it's a real delight to use. She doesn't look after it particularly well, dishwashers it etc and when it breaks or chips to badly just goes to the charity shop and buy some more.

Mm, I find it really ugly and quite naff at the same time. Just as well we all like different things. We have lovely mis-matched Moroccan style plates at the moment - but they have chipped like a bugger Grin
PanicBuyingSprouts · 02/01/2022 11:17

Just noticed that the Sophie Conran is in the Portmeirion sale. I might get some more myself Smile

Isseywith3witchycats · 02/01/2022 11:49

Another Benby fan here we bought ours a few pieces at a time on ebay and short of chucking it on a tiled floor it is almost indestructable

Isseywith3witchycats · 02/01/2022 11:49

thats Denby
