We have a bed being delivered on sunday, its just a single bed frame for the babies room as we still take it in turns to sleep in the same room as her..but just checked now and it can hold 100kg as its limit... I am over this by a couple of stone ..i do want to lose weight and i will once i have got my head in it but for now i am over! I would be sleeping in it 5 days per week do you think it will last for a while? Are all ingle beds like this? It wasnt too expensive so dont mind if it doesnt last yeara and years but would like it to last a few years if poss!

@NauseousNancy

God people are dicks about weight. Is it any wonder women feel constantly shite about themselves and like they are only worth something if they are slim?

I recon it’ll be fine. If you are worried slide the mattress onto the floor.

And don’t listen to arseholes telling you to address your weight. You clearly have a child that doesn’t sleep well, you must be shattered. More important things in life for you than weight loss - take care xx

This is such a lovely post. And I totally agree with you.

Wooden slat beds are no good for overweight people...... Get one with metal poles. I got one from argos for around £80 for a single bed for dd. Who isn't even overweight but has put her foot through many a bed...... Its a nice one too, bedknobs and broomsticks style.

If you want a wooden bed go to get laid beds, their slats are really thick and wide, more like planks making an extremely sturdy divan type base. Theyre not too expensive either and really lovely beds.

As pp have pointed out the bed will have been tested up to 100kg and the guarantee will cover up to 100kg.

At work we sell gas lift office chairs which also have a 100kg limit. This is pretty standard. We don't want customers suing us because they were injured because their chair broke.

We have introduced a range of bariatric chairs (a horrible term, but that is what the manufacturer calls them) as there is an increasing demand for them.

I have a single, slatted bed in the spare room. DP & I have shared it when we've given our bed to visitors.

Never considered the weight 'limit'. Between us we are approaching 180kg

The only time it's been a problem was when we were moving the slats side to side rather energetically and a few slipped off. Perfectly fine with every other movement. I've stood on it plenty of times (to change the light bulb above the bed etc).

The mattress will disburse your weight, it'll be fine!

Touchmybum · 01/01/2022 03:23

It sounds like the original bed you ordered might be a little flimsy? Could you not just send it back when it arrives on Sunday and buy something a bit more substantial?

RamblingFar · 01/01/2022 04:04

I've very overweight. I sleep on a slatted single bed every night. Not broken it yet.

Gechik · 01/01/2022 04:52

Probably just means it won't wear as well and you won't be able to complain if the slats break, even if it did break you would be on the mattress which would just dip a little, if it was cheap so easily replaceable, I would just use it and hope for the best,

Gechik · 01/01/2022 04:57

A lot of single beds are advertised for children, probably because of the weight limits. I was looking for a new one for the spare room and many were children's beds even though full size single.

thecapitalsunited · 01/01/2022 05:08

Am I the only one with fond memories of sharing a single bed with a ‘friend’ as a teenager? Pretty sure we came to more than 100kg combined and we were putting a big of force through the frame. Can’t see one overweight person sleeping peacefully breaking a bed even if it does say it was a 100kg weight limit. As pp say, it’s probably just the max it’s tested to not the weight at which it will fall apart.

Chouetted · 01/01/2022 05:28

Like PPs, I've had two grown adults in a single slatted bed, and neither of us were petite, but said bed was thick solid wood, equally solid slats and basically bombproof. Not all beds are created equal (and many are barely held together at all)

gunnersgold · 01/01/2022 06:56

My sister broke my sons bed , she is quite heavy . The slats just all snapped ! 🙈

SarahJessicaParker1 · 01/01/2022 09:14

Actually, thinking about it, yes, I shared a single bed with dh for ages! We were probably both around 11 stone then, so combined weight of 22 stone (obviously...check out me maths skills. Carol Vorderman better watch her back Grin)

Also shared a single with a friend when I was heavier than that but she was lighter, so probably still a good combined weight.

Testingprof · 01/01/2022 10:58

@TheMamaYo

Slatted beds are crap. If it’s a bed with a sturdy base it shouldn’t be a problem though.
Surely it depends on the type of slatted bed? The cheap ones that pop in and out are terrible and friends have had no end of troubles regardless of weight. All of our beds are slatted but screw into the base, I’m not sure I’d trust DSs over the weight limit and the slats are thinner, my bed however the slats are solid and huge. Mine doesn’t have a weight limit looking online.
RampantIvy · 01/01/2022 11:12

We have a king sized slatted bed from Ikea that is over 25 years old. It has supported my sister and her DH whose combined weights must be at least 30 stone.

TheMamaYo · 01/01/2022 19:41

@Testingprof that's fair comment. Grin I personally don't like them much, but of course not all of them are crap!

BogRollBOGOF · 01/01/2022 20:22

DS's bed was fairly cheap (but hey, child's bed). When we finished decorating the room, we showed our friends. While they were sitting on the bed there was a cracking sound.

It turned out there was a knot in the side of the bed creating a weakness and the sitting on one side of the bed split through the knot and the strips of laminate wood effect. DH screwed more wood on to the back of the strip to spread the load and strengthen it. Never mentioned it to them.

The combined weight was a lot more than 100kg, but it never occurred to us that the bed would object to two normal range people sitting on it.

The bed will probably be fine, but check for any structurally weak spots on it. The biggest issue would be applying a burst of pressure if sitting down on it abruptly.
