Can you tell me about your Smart TV please?

Not sure if there is a better topic for this so apologies if there is.

I want to buy a new Smart TV.

I want it 60 inch plus, wall mountable, great picture and sound, but most importantly, i want to have all the Apps that I regularly use.

I know most TVs have Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Video, etc, but I bought an LG tv about 18 months ago and can't add Disney, Apple TV or BritBox to it. To the point I've been watching some of my favourite shows on my phone!

Does anyone have a recent great TV that they'd recommend for the choice of existing Apps and the ability to load new ones?

(Or ones to avoid - thank you).

This is what we do too. You seem to be able to add most popular apps. It just plugs in to the hdmi port on the tv.

The remote control which came with it stopped working but you can get a Roku app on your phone to act as a remote control.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 31/12/2021 22:02

Oh and I got the Now stick rather than the Roku stick as it came with a month's free cinema pass.

CottonSock · 31/12/2021 22:04

Sony tv has Disney plus but I'm.not delighted with it.

EinsteinaGogo · 31/12/2021 22:24

Thanks all.

Think we may end up going with a fire stick / now tv stick.

You might want to look at Samsung TV's in that case as they have Apple TV and Disney apps built in?

skippy67 · 31/12/2021 22:30

We have all the apps you've mentioned on our LG. Have you Googled how to add them?

orchid2021 · 31/12/2021 22:32

Get a Hisense roku smart tv. It has all them apps.

EwwSprouts · 31/12/2021 22:33

We have a Samsung and have Disney without any extra gizmos.

Authenticcelestialmusic · 31/12/2021 22:34

Phillips have Disney, Amazon, Netflix. But it doesn’t have now tv, I use a fire stick. We like the Tv.

katmarie · 31/12/2021 22:34

Or get a chrome cast and cast whatever you want from your phone to your TV.

Thanks Skippy - I've just googled LG Content store and it does show those apps.

I'm not home now but will try over the weekend. I did try and add previously with no joy - not sure why so will look again 👍

Still looking for a new bigger TV but that would be helpful 👍

My sister has had the same issue with their LG TV which us only a couple of years old as they cannot upgrade the software. I have a year old 43 inch Samsung smart TV & I've managed to add Spotify & a couple of apps alongside the preinstalled prime & netflix etc.

MiloAndEddie · 31/12/2021 22:45

We have a one year old LG 65 inch and all those are built in.

It’s a superb tv, the sound quality is the best of any tv I’ve owned. No subtitles needed!

DickMabutt73962 · 31/12/2021 22:46

If you're going down the stick route I'd opt for an Amazon firestick instead. Of all the ones I've used it's the fastest one, others I've found always have a lag between pressing the button and it moving, which is annoying when you're trying to type the name of a show in.

The only benefit of Roku is that it can stream now TV, I'm not sure if it's changed but before Now app wasn't available to other streaming sticks. But unless you plan on upkeeping a subscription which is pricey as you pay separate prices for TV, movies etc (instead of an all inclusive Netflix) then I find it far inferior.

EinsteinaGogo · 01/01/2022 12:03

Thanks all.

I think we will definitely get a firestick as a temporary measure for the current TV.

I've done LG disservice - our current telly is actually a Phillips 🙈 - sorry LG.

I don't recommend this one at all.

Don’t get a Toshiba.

Bought a 42 inch smart tv 2 years ago. Backlight has failed already. Toshiba not interested, told me to get it repaired which is going to come in at over half the original cost.

Google tells me they use very cheap, rebranded components. Stick to LG, Samsung Sony etc as they manufacture their own bits to a higher standard. The Cheaper brands use any old tat.

JadeSeahorse · 01/01/2022 12:20

Lonelycrab. Totally agree about Toshiba!

I bought a relatively small one one for my dd - cost over £400 - and lasted 3 years. DH bought a bigger one for us - £600 - and gave up just short of 2 years. ☹️

Wouldn’t touch Toshiba with a 90ft barge pole now. They used to be pretty good years ago.

Lonelycrab · 01/01/2022 12:22

It’s a shame as their Laptops used to have a very good reputation.

Won’t go anywhere near them after this.

HandlebarLadyTash · 01/01/2022 12:27

Same with our Phillips tv, cant add Disney, the app is just not there. We wanted a small tv for a bedroom & picked it because it was white.

EinsteinaGogo · 01/01/2022 16:11

Thanks all.

Really want to get this next one right as it's going to be embedded in a wall (sort of) so will be a real faff to replace in the short term.

I wouldn't get a smart tv. As you say there are issues with apps and the software often quickly goes out of date.

Get a normal tv and a smart device. I can only comment on Apple TV as that's what I have but you can get all the apps you mention on there and it's kept up to date. The one I have is many years old and artillery going strong.
