Friend named her dog after dead mum

She can do what she likes.

I am a bit surprised.

It's an unusual name for a dog.

She has just told me and I didn't know what to say. I said as many nice things as possible.

Completely up to her and neither the dog nor her Mum will know.

I think it's nice. My DM has a name that would be great for a dog!

Changethetoner · 31/12/2021 18:02

I know someone else who did this. Presumably it is a comfort of sorts to the berieved person.

She can do what she likes.

You've summed it up there, really.

Yummypumpkin · 31/12/2021 18:06

Oh I'm glad you've both said that!

My friend is completely in her right mind. She does not thing the dog is the reincarnation of her mother or anything!

I just wasn't expecting it and then didn't want to.presume by saying, "oh after your mum" in case it wasn't.

I think I will text her to be a bit more enthusiastic.

And of course although I called her mum by her name, my friend called her "mum". So it's not v strange really.

😂I wanted to call my dog after my late dad , as he had a name that would really suit my dog. Turns out DH fancied calling him after his dad too.
He’s a lovely dog, very sweet and both names would have been fine, but we went for a 3rd name so as not to upset any family 😁

Our dog is named after dead FIL!

Yummypumpkin · 31/12/2021 18:19

These are lovely.

It is obviously very much a thing, as they say, and typical of me both to be unaware of this and to worry unnecessarily about a woman in her 60s who is more than capable if calling her dog whatever she chooses!

I would prob do the same. However it would be for a reason. My mum called me by my dogs name, accidentally, at work in front of our colleagues...across the canteen. I answered her. So I would do it as the eternal pay back...in a nice way of course.

I don't think there is anything wrong with what your friend is doing.

LordoftheDanceSaidHe · 31/12/2021 18:27

Not sure I would do that tbh. I'd find it a bit weird. However live and let live and if someone wants to then totally fair play.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 31/12/2021 18:27

I’m surprised that you’re surprised Op. this is quite a common thing.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 31/12/2021 18:29

If DS had been a girl his middle name would have been after our dog that died. We still gave him that middle initial.

TheSnowyOwl · 31/12/2021 18:30

I imagine she wants the comfort and the link of them sharing the name.
