So, just found out this is illegal in America.

Black current juice. Apparently there is a fungus that lives on black currents that would be bad for the economy, so it’s banned.

You can buy a gun, but not black current juice Confused

Or kinder eggs either btw

In some states in the US (definitely New Jersey and possibly still Oregon) it is illegal to pump your own petrol. I was told when I was growing up in NJ that it was to prevent discrimination against the elderly and disabled - ie self service was cheaper so the elderly and disabled were forced to use full service and forced to pay more. Not sure I buy that argument but that’s another example of strange illegalities in the US.

LifeExperience · 31/12/2021 17:04

American here. Black currants were banned in 1911 because they were a threat to pine trees which are a major source of wood for construction in the US. Many states have lifted the ban as there are now ways to prevent the damage to pines. Black currant juice is not popular here, but you can order it from Amazon.

Mommybunny · 31/12/2021 17:08

Yeah, I was right, the ban on pumping your own petrol had nothing to do with protecting the elderly…

Well, the amount of non consumables in Kraft plastic cheese, and no Kinder eggs are allowed to be sold.
Tbh, they’re fairly behind with a lot of things, like maternity right for working mothers and holiday entitlement and sacking people on the spot.

GrendelsGrandma · 31/12/2021 17:10

@Clovacloud

It’s illegal to own more than 6 dildos or vibrators in Texas. My mate who lives there, drives round with a gun in her glove compartment and that’s fine Hmm
Is that 6 dildos and six vibrators, or six in total? TBF, six is probably sufficient for any cowgirl
TheMoreThisReachesTheMainstrea · 31/12/2021 17:10

What’s their stanch on black pudding? Mine is that it’s delicious

RedPandaWanda · 31/12/2021 17:10

Did you learn that from Tik Tok op? I follow an American who tries English snacks and only learnt that this year when people where telling her to try Ribena and she said she couldn’t as anything blackcurrant was banned in the States!

My neighbour taught me to make black pudding, years ago. Starting it on New Year's Day was a mistake!
HollysBush · 31/12/2021 17:15

Oo great!! It’s nearly time for haggis.

WindInTheWillows7 · 31/12/2021 17:18

I notice a lot of America-bashing on mumsnet.

Tell her to look on Amazon. It's just not widely stocked.

Ribena

All sorts of black current products are available in the US.

Black Currents

No kidding. It's almost a competitive sport on MN. It doesn't really reflect well on those who seem giddy to do it.
Soubriquet · 31/12/2021 17:22

No I’m not on tik tok

How did they get to this, I wonder?

Shortage of dildos when they were first introduced?Grin

I agree with this. Though I didn't see this as America-bashing because I thought a lot of people posting were from there too. But upon reading again, I can see how it could be.
Jobseeker19 · 31/12/2021 17:26

Blackcurrant dilute is such a childhood staple in the UK.

The law was struck down by the courts in 2008. Sometimes politicians pass laws that they feel will be popular with parts of their political base knowing that this will be the result.

@Jabbawasarollingstone

Recently went to Scotland from Southern England. Tried haggus at two differdnt places just to be sure...and decided I didn't like it.

Lorne (square) sausage, however, is the food of the gods.

Iceland sell Lorne Sausage

Thanks. As far as I know, I'm the only Yank on the thread. This kind of thing just comes across as sneery and seems to serve no purpose other than to make people feel superior. It's really my least favorite aspect of MN.

LadyCatStark · 31/12/2021 17:30

I grew up in Saudi Arabia where we had mostly American products. We came back to the U.K. when I was 12 and it took until I was an adult to realise that I do actually like purple sweets as I hate grape flavouring 😂.

Ellowyn · 31/12/2021 17:32

We also banned thalidomide here.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 31/12/2021 17:32

I’m some states it’s illegal to breastfeed in public, even discreetly!

Oooo I would never have known the purple sweets were grape and not black current. Makes sense though

@Soubriquet yes purple skittles for example are grape. I used to pick the purple ones out 😂.

Nope. But let's keep the funny anti-American memes coming.
