My MIL has folded all my thongs into a pile of teeny tiny triangles and I think it may be the straw that makes me lose my shit...

Light hearted, kind off...

In-laws arrived on the 26th, they hired a cottage near by (their choice) but have so far spent all day every day with us...

MIL doesn’t really get the art of discussion and likes to speak about her childhood in monologue a LOT, quite often we can have good 20 minute stories where no one else is able to speak and with 3 DD’s it makes it tricky.

She also likes to re tell stories...

Mil “did I tell you about the time”

Every else “yes you told us about that”

Mil “retells the story which last 25 minutes”

Every story begins a very small throat clear and then a pursed lip pause for dramatic effect which makes me want to stick a knife in my eyeball!!

She is only late 50’s so can’t even blame it on being old and dithery...

Today she has take it upon herself to go into our washing basket in our bedroom, while we had nipped out, has washed all my delicates and I’ve came back to a thong tower, all folded into identical triangles...

Please tell me I’m not the only one on the edge with having relatives staying?!

I keep a bag of unpaired socks just for MIL. Or mention that DDs have messed up their drawers again.

Win-win, jobs i hate sorted, happy MIL kept busy.

(She sorted all mine and DHs drawers when I was in labour with DD1. I was both impressed (as my life was a lit easier with a newborn) and slightly confused...(

Everyone don't moan, you'll miss them when they've gone...

Zilla1 · 31/12/2021 13:33

Perhaps you could consult Youtube videos of napkin folding then pop to her cottage and make her underwear and FIL into swans?

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 31/12/2021 13:34

I can honestly say that I don't miss my FIL (described upthread) at all.
Frlrlrubert · 31/12/2021 13:35

At least she finished the job.

DM came to stay and started the laundry, left my work dresses (which you don't need to iron if you hang them straight up) screwed up in the basket of clean stuff, and left a basket of damp clothes in the utility without mentioning it. Actually more work than if she'd just left it alone.

DH's granny insists on helping when she stays at MIL's house, she's 90 and moves veeery slowly these days, so all activity in the kitchen must stop around her as she navigates putting her plate in the sink. MIL is very like me, a bit lax on the tidying (would never, ever do my laundry!) but when granny is staying everything must be perfect and instantly cleared up otherwise granny will do it, veeeery slowly, and tire herself out.

Shouldbedoing · 31/12/2021 13:35

I'd be irritable if I wore thongs OP

tiredofthisshit21 · 31/12/2021 13:35

@madisonbridges

Why can't I have a mother or mil that comes and cleans? Over lockdown I've been guilty of retelling stories, I think. Nothing new has happened.
There's always one who thinks you should be grateful for the interference!

Would suggest you kill her and hide the body under the patio.

FurryAntiWaxer · 31/12/2021 13:36

@Laiste

My MIL wouldn't do that.

But she does do the 'when i was young' stories over and over.

''I was up at 3 in the morning washing my 301 brothers and sisters school clothes when i was only 2 and a half. Scrubbing the clothes using a dead rat'' type stuff.

God, hopefully the OPs MIL didn't clean her underwear with a dead rat! Envy not envy Maybe that was her plan all along.
SarahJessicaParker1 · 31/12/2021 13:36

My mum is dead and I don't regret lighthearted moans about her habits at all. That isn't what killed her funnily enough! In fact, we still reminisce about the time she did whatever to wind us up. It didn't mean we wished her dead.

BerthaBlythe · 31/12/2021 13:37

You really need to try a pair of big pants misses point of thread

PAFMO · 31/12/2021 13:38

So she did your washing and folded it afterwards?
You're going to have to jump the shark for a classics nomination.

Nydj · 31/12/2021 13:39

@ShinySquirrel

Excellent, now you can all have a jolly family game of underwear jenga.

I'm in the "you wear thongs??" camp.

Last seen in my house circa 2003 - even teen dd hates them!

Try seamless briefs OP - your arse-crack will thank you.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 31/12/2021 13:42

Ah. I feel your pain. I'm older than that, but I understand the art of social ping pong unlike my mother Grin

housemaus · 31/12/2021 13:42

Has she folded them into triangles like we used to fold crisp packets at school? Grin

BeMoreGoldfish · 31/12/2021 13:43

My MIL does the competitive poverty stories - she had the hardest upbringing of anyone, ever, in the whole world Hmm.

5 days over Christmas and I was ready to kill.

LOL!!! I am cackling at that. Though I am guilty of a bit of dead rat scrubbing childhood storytelling. Whenever DS2 starts in Boomers having it all I remind him he's got a healthy handout from his grandparent boomers while I got nothing from them and worked from age 12 etc etc. Grin

Yes I always think in these posts that I want a MIL who comes and cleans nad does the washing up.
Loveatthe5anddime · 31/12/2021 13:48

DH just thinks it’s quite funny, he would step in if he thought she had overstepped the mark and has done in the past, mostly when it comes to issues with DC but he is, in general a lot more tolerable off people than I am.

I love my big pants but with it being Christmas there has been a few parties and nice dresses and a lot more *ahem fun with DH, probably why I’m finding it all the more embarrassing that she’s taken it upon herself to build the thong tower of judgement!!!

Thong tower is absolutely the best phrase I've ever ever heard. Genuinely.
