Or do you spend money each day

Family of 5 who seem to plough through milk/fresh fruit etc so have to do a couple of top up shops a week but there are still probably around 3 days a week where I don’t spend any money.

Almost2022 · 31/12/2021 09:37

I was thinking this yesterday. I spend money every day and sometimes on things I don't necessarily need! I'm an impulse buyer. Next year I am going to max up my visits to the two places I have memberships for and take Picnics with us, so we don't spend any money there like we usually would.

AuntieMarys · 31/12/2021 09:38

We eat out or go drinking twice a week....I go into our city shopping maybe twice a year.
I have a couple of coffees out a week, and lunch with friends.
Probably 3 no spend days a week.

ItsFuckingJuneDadQuickHide · 31/12/2021 09:41

Frequently, I stop and think if I really need it or not and it's usually not

Passthecake30 · 31/12/2021 09:41

During the first lockdown I started getting a weekly delivery and meal planned, so stopped the need for top up shops. I have a milkman so don’t even need to buy milk. It is very refreshing not to have to keep popping to the supermarkets! Since then I have started popping to one on the way back from an exercise class but I’m going to reign it in again for Jan and Feb as the cupboards are full and the bank account is not!

grapewine · 31/12/2021 09:44

Yes. Mainly because I can't afford to spend too much. It's all about what I need not what I want. It does help create less clutter though!

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 31/12/2021 09:51

Most days.

KohlaParasaurus · 31/12/2021 09:53

Yes, more days than not are no-spend days as in I don't make any conscious financial transactions, but this is dependent on the fact that all the utilities are paid by direct debit and I do a big supermarket shop around once a week. When we had DC at home I used to have to go to the shop most days to top up essentials like milk or to fulfil last minute demands for caramelised pistachios and a rambutan for school cookery classes.

I spend money on more days in the summer than in the winter because I'm more likely to go out for the day and buy coffee or ice cream.

IncompleteSenten · 31/12/2021 09:54

There are far more days in the month where I don't spend money than where I do

HeronLanyon · 31/12/2021 09:55

Pre Covid no spend days were rare. Maybe 1 or 2 a month.
Covid - not u usual at all the. Have bigger spends on days I go out and about or order delivery or big shop etc.
Overall spending is definitely down as very few mindless haphazard purchases.

sandgrown · 31/12/2021 09:55

@purpledagger. I spent £4 on an old fashioned plunger and it’s the most effective sink unblocker I have used .

megletthesecond · 31/12/2021 09:56

Yes. Usually a Sunday. But sometimes in the week too.

CherryAndAlmond · 31/12/2021 09:58

I used to. Now I have teenagers! I spend a lot without even walking out the door.

FingChristmasFamily · 31/12/2021 09:59

Not many. Today may be one though. I have covid. DH went shopping yesterday. We don’t need anything. So yeah, today and maybe tomorrow. That might be it though for the month. I’m definitely going to try and spend as little as possible in January.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 31/12/2021 10:02

Not really. Bread, milk, sugar and bananas always need topping up, and DD is addicted to baguettes at the moment, which only taste good the first day.

emmathedilemma · 31/12/2021 10:06

Apart from things that are already paid for or on direct debit such as the gym and gas / electric I rarely spend money Mon - Fri when I'm working. My office is in the middle of nowhere so apart from a tank of petrol in the car every few weeks to get there and a packed lunch I shop for at weekends there's nothing to spend money on!

notacooldad · 31/12/2021 10:08

I have weeks where I font spend money!.
Most of the bills are paid annually eg water insurance , council tax TV licence gym membership, professional memberships. The rest is on dd. However for the past few years I have challenged myself to see how long I can go without breaking say a 20 note. I have stopped all incidental spending, eg a coffee and a muffin on my way home from work, buying a new lipstick when I already have dozens. Just small things like that, even parking, I have parked further away from places to avoid paying where possible. I have saved ( and put away into savings account) literally thousands of pounds. Covid shut down helped but I had already started my cut down waste before it had an impact.
Every now and then I'll have a splurge on new stuff but I'm more content now.

BurntToastAgain · 31/12/2021 10:11

No. Never.

If I don’t actively use my debit card, I’m still using up food and energy and all the other things that cost money.

I have plenty of days where I spend no money beyond the additional costs of life. But life just costs loads.

User48751490 · 31/12/2021 10:16

Hardly out each day apart from dog walking so hardly spend any money on a daily basis.

DaphneduM · 31/12/2021 10:17

Most days at the moment - I've reined in my spending completely to save more money. We're on a fixed income - both retired - and I'm concerned about increased fuel bills, council tax, and general inflation. I already have a buffer, but want to increase it. We have big petrol bills as we look after our grandson twice a week which involves considerable car travel. I have what I consider to be a beautiful wardrobe of clothes, and apart from a bit of money to spend completing our house (new sliding doors) and money on plants (gardening is my passion) that's it, apart from essentials. I will be treating a friend to lunch in an Italian restaurant later in the month and having a day out with another friend, but trying to cut down on mindless unnecessary spending. I also gave our daughter and son-in-law a lump sum to pay off their car loans (under £10k) and want to recoup that too.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 31/12/2021 10:26

Well I am spending money every day as in I use gas/ electric/ water / petrol to drive to work . Direct debits go out of my bank , but yeah I don’t spend much day to day . In the week not much I bring my own lunch to work may have to top up shop . Weekend the most food shop if I go out etc.

deadlanguage · 31/12/2021 10:27

Most days, I do a weekly shop and don’t do top-ups. If we run out of something we don’t have it until the next weekly shop.

BurntToastAgain · 31/12/2021 10:28

One of the truly depressing things about a bloody smart meter is that it makes you aware of the energy costs of just staying at home doing very little.

MerryChristmas21 · 31/12/2021 10:31

Grr MN keeps playing up, & I keep losing my posts.

Short version

I have lots of 'no spend' days, it's not done deliberately, I just do one Tesco delivery a week & buy petrol (for work) and beyond that I don't buy much.

MerryChristmas21 · 31/12/2021 10:39

@BurntToastAgain

One of the truly depressing things about a bloody smart meter is that it makes you aware of the energy costs of just staying at home doing very little.
My smart meter lives in the kitchen, behind some nice glass jars! When I first got it, it did my head in & I was worried about my bills as the daily amount seemed worryingly high, but actually my bills were much the same as they'd always been & didn't seem to reflect the meter (thank god) I've looked at the settings a number of times & they seem right, so it makes ZERO sense (I'll look again & reset as per new fixed tariff rates) . Periodically I'll check the actual meters reflect the reading on my bills. (Though I haven't for ages - oops will remember to check on the next bill)
