‘Cheap coffin’

Why is it awful if it is factual? Surely they are indicating that by not "wasting" money on a coffin he is humble?

Littlewhiteballs · 30/12/2021 19:49

"Tutu's wish was that there be "no ostentatiousness or lavish spending" on his funeral and he even "asked that the coffin be the cheapest available", his foundation said"

Did you read the article op? What's with all the click bait thread titles today?

IHateWasps · 30/12/2021 19:49

Did you read the article? It's accurate. He specifically asked for the cheapest possible coffin.

BonnesVacances · 30/12/2021 19:49

I would imagine that was in line with his wishes, hence relevant.

ChequerBoard · 30/12/2021 19:55

It pales into insignificance besides the stunt they pulled having Alan Dershowitz on BBC News as a guest to talk about the conviction of Ghislaine Maxwell without mentioning that he is implicated in the case and accused of having sex with an alleged victim of Jeffrey Epstein.

They tried to depict him as some sort of neutral expert following Ghislaine Maxwell’s guilty verdict and allowed him to bash his and Prince Andrew’s accuser, Virginia Giuffre, claiming that the jury didn’t use her to testify “because they ultimately didn’t believe she was telling the truth.”

This was such a gross attempt to twist the facts that the BBC have been forced to admit that the interview did not “meet the BBC’s editorial standards” and admit that Dershowitz “wasn’t a suitable person to interview.”

rrhuth · 30/12/2021 19:59

@ChequerBoard It was absolutely wrong that person was on as an impartial expert, but the bits I have read suggests it was cock-up rather than conspiracy

gosling24 · 30/12/2021 20:01

Misleading but factual it seems.

The BBC still think Mrs Brown's Boys is funny, that is really losing the plot.
@ChequerBoard It was absolutely wrong that person was on as an impartial expert, but the bits I have read suggests it was cock-up rather than conspiracy
It's still a gross failure of journalistic standards though, and the damage is done whatever the reason/excuse.

Dershowitz was able to grandstand and decry the reliability of his alleged victim on an internationally broadcast TV channel.

I find that abhorrent.

Hellocatshome · 30/12/2021 20:05

But he is lying in a cheap coffin. The headline is designed to make you click to read the article and when you do you learn the reason for the cheap coffin. I cant understand the problem?

OldaRailer · 30/12/2021 20:06

It's tacky.

Lesserspottedmama · 30/12/2021 20:06

The BBC are just a travesty generally these days. I stopped getting my news from them last year as their reporting is such a poor standard now.

OldaRailer · 30/12/2021 20:06

Celebrate the man.

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 30/12/2021 20:07

op whats your outrage about now??

DroopyClematis · 30/12/2021 20:07

Heartily agree!
DroopyClematis · 30/12/2021 20:08

The BBC could have worded it much better and in keeping with his wishes.

Scrooge89 · 30/12/2021 20:09

I did celebrate the man. I felt like the only one who posted when he died with literally no comments.

And the BBC could have put it better knowing the context of ‘cheap’

OP posts:
OldaRailer · 30/12/2021 20:10

Oh I was agreeing with you op.

NailSaloon · 30/12/2021 20:10

The BBC traded off WW2 reporting standards they no longer have, they have had to fire staff for bizarre reporting.

Scrooge89 · 30/12/2021 20:13

Thanks @OldaRailer sorry - I mean yes 100% I just feel outraged and I’m not even a Christian.

And there is nothing more to say in a headline about Desmond Tutu?
OP posts:
NailSaloon · 30/12/2021 20:17

It took me a while to remember who died, at first I thought there was a garment in a coffin Confused.

Hellocatshome · 30/12/2021 20:22

And there is nothing more to say in a headline about Desmond Tutu

Well of course there is but its a link through to the article and has to be about 8 words long.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 30/12/2021 20:38

'Modest' or 'plain' coffin would have been better.

Cheap sounds, well, cheap, I know what was meant by it now everyone has explained but I wouldn't otherwise have known why the BBC were throwing shade!

Scrooge89 · 30/12/2021 20:39

Simple casket?
