Bristol restaurant recommendations

Can anyone suggest a great place to eat for a special occasion?

A private dining room would be lovely but fantastic food, good service and a nice ambience come top of the list.

Bristol's a convenient place for people to gather but we don't live there, hence this thread.

The Pony on North St (not city centre but not far)
The Pumphouse used to be great years ago, with a private section and great food, but haven't been there for a long time so may have changed.

Hotel du vin is lovely. River Station used to be fab but not sure now. San Carlos like others have said is consistently great

Those saying Hotel du Vin, is that the 'original' one or Avon Gorge? Or are they both good?

Little French is amazing - no private dining room but the food is absolutely outstanding. They were on that programme on the BBC with Michel Roux Jr and Fred Siriex not that long ago…

If you’re prepared to venture a little further to Bath, then Menu Gordon Jones is top notch. They do private events and as it’s so small, you’d potentially end up with the whole restaurant to yourselves.

I got married in the one in town and food is really nice. Cowshed The ivy Pasture

River Station was dire. We went there for lunch a few weeks ago with a client and it was comfortably one of the worst meals I’ve had recently.

If you like seafood and steak Palomar is lovely.

The main (not Avon gorge) du Vin has a lovely private dining room
