2 silly questions!!

Bought DC a private plate yesterday from the DVLA.

Can i buy the plates without documentation?

How do the DVLA know which car its assigned to?

You need to request a change of plates to add the new personalised ones to a car. You can do it online and you tell them the original reg that's coming off the car and the new one that's going on.
If you go to somewhere like Halfords you'll need documentation to get the new plates made up but there are loads of online suppliers that don't ask for anything.

As above!

LaDoIceVita · 29/12/2021 08:28

When you change the registration online the email confirmation from DVLA can be printed and used as proof to get plates. I think the transfer fee is £80. If you use an online supplier to get plates, you can't have the car on the road (driven or parked) until you've notified DVLA and fitted the new plates. You also need to notify the insurers - there'll be an admin charge.

Private number plates are a tax on the vain and stupid. I'm all in favour.

MrsDThomas · 29/12/2021 08:40

Thank all for the info.

@Yabusux I asked for advice, not your opinion. If you can’t advice, please shut up.

Halfords were weird when I presented them with the certificate, they said it needed to be assigned to a vehicle. Had to ask for a manager. Lots of ebay companies that would do it and print with illegal spacing like the so many plates you see on the roads.

There are a few local garages on the DVLA site which I would use.

There isn't any fee for putting the personalised plates onto a car. You pay £80 when you take them off and want to keep the reg on retention.

Lots of info online about how the dvla operates you can transfer and retain and the dvla obviously keeps records of the ones on vehicles and certificates, I bought one last year and was pretty easy to get on my car, this might help has some info on the different things you can do once you buy one: www.click4reg.co.uk/private-number-plates/guides/how-to-assign-private-number-plate/#how-to-transfer-a-registration-number-from-one-car-to-another
