Anyone know Durham well?

I want to take my dad to visit Durham Cathedral on the train but he can't walk far or up hills. Is the walk from the station to the cathedral flat?

Station is at the top of quite a hill iirc

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 28/12/2021 17:35

Nope it isn't I'm afraid. It's a bit of a long walk for someone of limited mobility as well. I'd suggest a taxi but I'm not even sure taxis can access Palace Green where the cathedral is. :(

Mumteedum · 28/12/2021 17:35

Hell no, I'm afraid not! It's a good walk.. Train station in very steep hill and then hilly through town up to cathedral. You'd be best off doing a taxi or looking into bus options

sweetheartyparty · 28/12/2021 17:36

The Cathedral is at top of a hill too

2tired2bewitty · 28/12/2021 17:36

Definitely not, the walk through the town to the cathedral is very steep and cobbled in places. You could get a taxi though.

Mumteedum · 28/12/2021 17:36

Maybe ring tourist info.. they will probably have suggestions?

JuniorMint · 28/12/2021 17:37

Not at all, the station is at the top of one steep hill and the cathedral is at the top of another very steep hill.

AntennaReborn · 28/12/2021 17:37

Yes the walk to and from the station is steep, I would book a taxi to as close to the cathedral as possible

Agree with others, its a good hike down a hill and back up. I think if he is registered disabled the taxis might be able to take him up to palace green.

Ninnymuggins1 · 28/12/2021 17:38

There's a bus that runs between the station and the cathedral - if you Google Durham cathedral bus that will bring up the info you need.

Ratched · 28/12/2021 17:38

There is a cathedral bus that runs regularly up and down the hill.
It really is a bit steep to walk it. I will try and link to the bus.....

It's a wonderful cathedral, and Palace Green itself is gorgeous.

@Jellykneees that's brilliant! So glad he enjoyed it, it is the most beautiful building.
Was the moon still there?

PicaK · 30/12/2021 11:09

Glad you went. I was at uni there and it's so beautiful

AlviarinAesSedai · 30/12/2021 11:20

The moon left before the Lumiere.

Ratched · 30/12/2021 11:38

@AlviarinAesSedai

The moon left before the Lumiere.
Did it? I wasn't sure, wish I had seen it though, apparently it was brilliant.
PizzasPlease · 01/01/2022 20:17

I went to see the moon and was really disappointed.
I love the cathedral and visit a few times a year.

Gorseinon22 · 01/01/2022 20:20

I was at university there. Glad others could help and it all went well.
