We took in a dobo hamster and my 12 year old absolutely loves him.
My son is autistic and selective mute and suffers from terrible anxiety, I have posted about the struggle it is sometimes. Anyway it has been so great to see him with the hamster. Talking to me about their needs looking after him and he has started talking to his hamster asking him “what do you want” and “what are you up too’ etc etc.
In the short time we have had him he has brought my son so much joy!
My son likes his research and has been researching how to look after D properly and has got a bit miffed that the cages sold in pet shops for small animals mostly are too small.
So he signed this petition and got the rest of the family to sign it.
He asked how can we get a few more signatures I told him I would try.
So please if you can sign , it will make him so happy to see that he managed to get a few more people to sign.

Signed and shared on Facebook Smile.

Well done to your son for highlighting this, it is important and many people don't realise this when buying a pet.

People tend to assume pet shops want the best for the animals they sell and don't realise that, while yes, their new pet will survive in the home sold to them, we should all be aiming for any animals we keep to be happy and thriving, not just surviving!

Providing a suitable environment and meeting all our pet's needs is our responsibility - they depend on us for everything, and in return for us keeping them as pets we should provide the very best possible life for them Smile.

This is a good idea. Many people have no idea of what is required - we didn't when we got our first hamster - so it's good to raise awareness. My dd is the same age and we are often in pets at home, have had quite a few chats with people buying hamsters to try and educate them on their needs! I bought 2 omlet cages - which are £100 new, I got mine second hand - before realising that they are actually far too small. My hamsters weren't very happy in them. Now I don't know what to do with them!! Don't want to sell on and upset a poor hamster somewhere. Next stop - a detolf cage... and maybe a couple of Roborovskis to go in it!! We have a gorgeous Syrian now. They are lovely pets. We had 4 until a few months back but sadly now only one because of old age and illness. 🐹
