WWYD - car quandry

Is this the right topic area? Anyhow...

Looking to replacing an ageing family car (SUV type) that my DP drives. Nearly 10 years old, want something abit newer, with better headlight (the current cars lights are crap, might as well drive with your eyes closed).

DP's current car doesn't have any finance on it, so it's just insurance, road tax, and maintenance (say, £90 a month all in).

I've the option of taking a company car @ £213 a month tax, and give that to DP as their primary car. But no maintenance, road tax, or insurance costs. And the company car fits the family, albeit a little dull (Skoda Octavia). Then would sell DP's existing SUV and pocket about £6k in the bank.

WWYD: take the (new) company car for the effective extra cost of £123 a month?

Is he allowed to drive it during your working hours?
My DH had one that only they could drive it to and from work ie I couldn't drive it to my work.

Skoda Octavias are nice little cars. Solid and reliable. ( obviously the VRS is more funGrin)

Is there no P11D? I don't actually know about these things, but you still have to pay tax.

yeah, the £213 / month is the tax liability. But no restrictions on personal use (DP can use it all the time, providing I can get to meetings when I need to - and I've got my own car I'm intent on keeping as I like it).

Just cant get over how expensive cars are now!!

I have to be the main driver on my company car, and for insurance purposes (and probably tax) my husband can only drive it for leisure (not work).

Has your DH test driven a Skoda Octavia? What does he think?

It sounds like a reasonably good deal. But it’s your DH that’s going to be driving it so his opinion is probably the one to listen to.
