Shock

I’m watching it today for the first time having loved little women growing up and seen the 90’s version. It’s just so bad!! and the casting of Laurie! He’s terrible.

I think you have to watch the whole thing to get it.

BingoLingFucker · 27/12/2021 17:18

You can’t beat the 1949 version.

I can’t bring myself to watch the new version, Emma Watson is such a dreadful actress it puts me off.

Yeah this.

I avoid anything she's in now. She's awful.

I haven’t seen that version, I’ll have to make a point of seeing it.

I don't like any tv/film versions much, because it was one of the first 'proper' books I read and nothing matches my head version!

Pollingbadly · 27/12/2021 17:21

But have you got to the end! The pacing makes more sense when you can see it as a whole.

I think it's clever and skilled but not quite Little Women.

viques · 27/12/2021 17:22

Since Emma W made her true self known I call this film Little Menstruators so as not to upset her.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 27/12/2021 17:22

I watched it last Christmas and enjoyed it but agree it’s not a patch on the Winona Ryder version. I also think you have to already know the story for this one to make sense, no idea what I’d make of it if I came to it cold.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 27/12/2021 17:24

The Laurie guy looks like a 14 year old child throughout. Who then marries the permanently 30 year old Amy Grin

Oh I enjoyed it. Emma grinds my gears and some of the casting was a bit off. And the wafting back and forth in the timeline made me dizzy.

But it was very painterly. The beach scenes were very Monet and the station scene evocative of Renoir. I loved it for that.

And it beats so much other cinema hands down.

nancy75 · 27/12/2021 17:25

This film has the worst casting of any film I’ve ever seen!
Amy looks like she’s old enough to be Laurie’s mum, Laurie looks about 11, none of them are how they are in the book.
I love the really old film, don’t mind the Winona version but this was awful

DickMabutt73962 · 27/12/2021 17:25

💯 agree OP! Like you I think that the 90s version is the best. Terribly miscast as well, I have no idea how it got such rave reviews.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 27/12/2021 17:26

And I can’t believe you haven’t seen the early version.

MamaWeasel · 27/12/2021 17:27

It's truly awful

FudgeSundae · 27/12/2021 17:28

YES! No one in my family agrees but no one loves the books like I do. Particularly upset that they ruined professor Bhaer who is supposed to be middle aged and kind and poor, not some handsome floppy haired socialite?! And AS IF Jo would ever change her mind about turning Laurie down. Absolutely not.

cantgetmyheadroundit · 27/12/2021 17:29

I'm a lifelong Little Women fan, and I settled down to watch it on Christmas Eve. Turned it off after half an hour, and I never do that.

MirthlessChuckle · 27/12/2021 17:30

Yes it's godawful! I was so disappointed!

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 27/12/2021 17:30

Yes thus really shocked me! Why did they do that? I was expecting another Gabriel Byrne type.

Yes, the timeline constantly shifting mate me feel dizzy. You have to know the story really well to understand what's going on at all

SundayTeatime · 27/12/2021 17:31

I’m rather partial to the 2017 version.

flapjackfairy · 27/12/2021 17:32

I agree. it us v confusing if you dont know the story already and the over the top banter between the girls in the first half of the film was just v irritating. I wanted Amy to drown by the time we reached that scene tbh.

🤣🤣
Patbutchersarrow · 27/12/2021 17:34

It's awful! I managed about half an hour and that was enough for me!! The 90s version is the best imo!

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 27/12/2021 17:34

“No dear, you have a guest”

Jo: Without looking- “I don’t know anyone” so I won’t bother turning round, I’ll just carry on stuffing my face and be the rudest dickhead that ever existed. Hmm
