Do you think motorway traffic will be heavier on New Year’s Day or on January 2nd?

We’ll be driving from Manchester to London on either January 1st or 2nd, most likely via the M1. Which of the two days would you suggest as a little less busy? Have a good holiday and a safe journey back home xx

I’d go 2nd January. Let the drink drivers go on the 1st.

VaulterTech · 27/12/2021 02:21

I don’t think they will differ too much, ho whichever suits your better

When I’ve been on road, 1st is always really quiet especially in the morning.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/12/2021 07:41

1st would probably be quieter, people will be hungover and (hopefully) not driving!

timtam23 · 27/12/2021 09:09

We have driven (although in the opposite direction, north from London) on both of those dates and I would say 1st Jan

2nd busier as it is more the end of the Festive break.

PAFMO · 27/12/2021 09:31

Jan 2nd.
Back to work on the 3rd.
NYD is always as dead as a dodo on the roads

megletthesecond · 27/12/2021 09:34

2nd will be busier. But the 3rd is also a bank holiday in England so it spreads the traffic out.

timtam23 · 27/12/2021 09:36

Oops sorry my post above is confusing, I meant to say I would do the drive on 1st Jan, 2nd definitely likely to be busier despite the BH Mon on 3rd

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 27/12/2021 09:38

The obvious answer would seem to be that all roads will be quiet on New Year's day, isn't that always the case

I drive on motorways quite a lot and haven't found any to be especialy busy since covid expect at the normal rush hour times you'd expect.
