Mil and dm said it's pointless to have bought a bike this xmas for ds aged 2.5. I'm curious at what age did mnetters buy theirs dcs a bike?

I wouldn't buy a bike at that age but a nice light balance bike would be brilliant my DS used to love his at that age.

Most kids seem to have a balance bike at 2y.

DD got her first pedal bike last Christmas at 3.5y but didn't learn to pedal it until she was just turned 4

What was wrong with the previous answers?

I'll be the first show off to say that I got dd a pedal bike at about that age, she used it as a balance bike for a bit and then started pedalling just after she turned 3. ( ds - no chance, that child is nearly 5 and can barely run, let alone ride a bike)

EcoCustard · 26/12/2021 21:33

Definitely not pointless in my opinion. Dc1 got his first bike at 2.5, had mastered a balance bike. He did have stabilisers on until 3.5 and is very tall. Dc2 first bike at 3 stabilisers off at 4. Dc3 got her first bike in lockdown 1 at nearly 3, stabilisers off in the October. Dc4 is 2.5 and now on Dc1’s old bike with stabilisers and he manages fine, will lose the stabilisers in spring/summer. They all had balance bikes albeit Decathlon/Halford ones and started on them at 1-1.5 and moved on to Decathlon bikes as they were ready. They were all very mobile early on.

Balance bike at 2 and pedal bike at 4. He could have used pedal bike earlier but he was fine on balance bike so I waited.

Mittenmob · 26/12/2021 23:08

My DD had balance bike at 2 and a half and up on pedals by 3 and a half. My DS is already looking pedal-worthy at 2 and a half as he's very very confident on his balance bike but we will probably wait until his 3rd birthday before he gets his hand me down pedal bike.

BlueShirtGuy · 26/12/2021 23:11

Mine got a 14 inch pedal bike the Christmas they were three and learnt to ride without the stabilisers the summer when they were three.

AnnaMarieQ · 26/12/2021 23:12

All mine had their first bike, with stabilisers, at age 3. This was before balance bikes were a thing.

My GC had balance bikes aged 2. My children and GC were at least 4 years old before they could balance without stabilisers. Most were 5 years old. Hope that helps.

My ds is 2.5 years old

If you start with balance bike it's quicker, they don't need stabilisers at all, it's straight from balance bike to full pedal.bike

stargirl1701 · 27/12/2021 09:01

Balance bike at 2 years old. First pedal bike at 3 years old. Then take away the balance bike at 4 years old.

Doveyouknow · 27/12/2021 09:02

DC1 got a balance bike when he was 2 and took an interest in it when he was 2.5yrs. DC2 got it as a hand me down when he was interested. Both got pedal bikes at around 4 I think. Can't remember when they started riding them without stablisers. Not sure there is much advantage to them riding pedal bikes early but there is no issue with them trying early (as long as you can keep up with them!)

BewareTheRedNosedDragon · 27/12/2021 09:03

Balance bike at 2, pedal bike at either 4 or 5 here (my younger dc couldn't get the hang of pedalling as early as eldest did so held off for longer with them)

It really depends on the child and since your MIL did not buy it and doesn't have to teach dc to ride it her opinion is surely irrelevant?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/12/2021 09:04

Elder DD was 3.5 after she outgrew the second balance bike.

Younger DD was nearly 3 as she couldn't work out the balance bike, but could pedal a bike with stabilisers. (Shes usually quite coordinated but cycling was a mental block for her.. finally mastered it around 6 5/7.)
