If you get money as a gift do you actually buy yourself something ?

I've been guilty quite a few times of spending Xmas / birthday money on the general shop / petrol etc
My birthday this year I did actually spend it on myself
I have money for Xmas now and I feel like I should really make an effort to buy myself something but there is nothing I need . If I don't spend it quick it will be spent in the supermarket and forgotten about.
I think if I gave someone money and found out it had been spent in Tesco I might be a bit peeved, I'm not sure 🤔

When my DGP gave me money I used to earmark it for something I needed but would have bought anyway (eg new shoes).

I would spend it on food etc. if there is nothing i need why waste it on that?

I had money this year. Spent it on a bracelet I’ve been looking at for a while and entry into 2 races (running)

I pop mine into a little savings account until there is something I want. Not for the interest but just to keep it aside

I put it into my savings account. Otherwise I would end up just spending it in Tesco like you say!

Usually I stuff 50% into savings/pension/ISA, 50% frivolous homewards on sale – my weakness is crockery and blankets.

I usually put money given as gifts in a separate purse and wait until I see something I want

I usually put it towards something specific, it's sometimes "practical" but luxury things which I couldn't otherwise justify : bits for the Kenwood chef, other times it pays for accomodation or something on holiday.
