My Samsung Galaxy S6 has died...

Glorieta · 26/12/2021 15:56

...so need recommendations for a worthy replacement. I know it's ancient but has been a loyal companion til I dropped it on the front steps and smashed it to smithereens

I'm not a techy kind of gal but do use apps galore so looking for a Samsung new kid on the block a similar size to the now deceased S6 for a reasonable post Christmas budget.

Handset only as I have free calls etc from work.

Please help Mumsnetters as DH is trying to push me towards an iPhone

Following with great interest, my J5 is on its last legs so need a replacement.

SNUG2022 · 26/12/2021 16:28

My S7 just died and I've gone for an S21.

Duchess379 · 26/12/2021 16:34

I've got the S10+ after I dropped my Pixel 15ft onto a tiled floor. Had it about a month & think it's great👍🏼

BertieBotts · 26/12/2021 16:35

Check out the Pixel range from google. I swapped to one from a Samsung and really like it.

GSMArena is great for doing an advanced search, I'd go in and check the stats of the S6 and then you can search for anything similar/better.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/12/2021 16:39

I bought Dd a Nokia, came with case and wireless headphones for £150, takes great photos and doesn't seem to have any problems running apps. Perhaps a bit slower than an iPhone but the price difference this is to be expected. Its a great phone.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/12/2021 16:41

I think it was this one, although they aren't currently doing the bundle nokia

TottiePlantagenet · 26/12/2021 16:42

Similar size and good performance (for an older phone) would be the Galaxy S9 IMHO. About £150 second hand on ebay.

WhatsitWiggle · 26/12/2021 16:45

Stick with the S range - I recently upgraded my S9 to A52 and I hate it, wish I'd just changed the battery on the S9. So I'd get a refurbished older model if I were you. The phones are getting bigger as well, so if you prefer the smaller size you need an older model.

Becclescake · 26/12/2021 16:45

Xiaomi do some incredible phones for the price- mobile.mi.com/uk/

twilightcafe · 26/12/2021 16:47

Very happy with my S9+. No desire to upgrade yet.

topcat2014 · 26/12/2021 16:50

I have an A21 and really like it. Had a second hand S7 before

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/12/2021 16:59

I went from an S range to an A71 and it is a bit on the crap side, less than 2 years old and the battery life is rubbish and it is so slow that although the camera quality is great it takes about half an hour between pressing the button and the picture taking.

I'll either be back to the S range when I get a new phone or possibly look at motorola, dh has one and ds1 has got the g30 for Christmas which seems great and much cheaper than samsung for the equivalent spec so i may have to steal it and play with the camera.

missbunnyrabbit · 26/12/2021 17:30

I have a Samsung galaxy a3. Only runs android 6 so my apps are all slowly refusing to work. I was thinking of getting an s6. All the new phones are so, so big.

ichundich · 26/12/2021 17:35

Following with interest. I can't get over the price of the latest Samsung S, £1,700 😲!

Buttons294749 · 26/12/2021 20:40

I pay £25 pm for the s20 FE 5g, its ace! I lobe samsung and hated my iphone although dont get on with apple in general

MrsClatterbuck · 26/12/2021 21:06

My S6 died just over a year ago. It was the battery and sometimes wish I had just got a new battery. I now have the S10 which is fine. I actually need to get a new battery for the S6 as there is stuff I need to retrieve. Had the S2 and S4 and likely to stick with Samsung. Have a Samsung TV and tablet as does dh
Phone and tablet.

Glorieta · 01/01/2022 00:46

Thanks all

Got an almost brand new looking lilac samsung s9 for £140 from a shop in town - DH bartered for me. V happy with size, speed and battery life.

I have an S9 and love it. I was recently bullied into changing it to an S20(I think?) I hated it so much I sent it right back!

S9 is now starting to glitch and stick so I'm not sure what to do? - I love this phone!

Billandben444 · 01/01/2022 06:17

You're either an Samsung/Android person or an iPhone one - changing over is never a good idea!

HomeTheatreSystem · 01/01/2022 09:17

Re the S9, can you change the battery yourself? My earlier model Samsung has an integrated battery that I can't change but it's starting, after 4 yrs, to lose charge quite quickly so may need to look soonish for a replacement, still in the Samsung S range though.

wolfstarling Why didn't you like the S20? I am looking to upgrade my S9 this year, so interested in opinions about this phone.
OtherPlans · 01/01/2022 20:46

I'm in a similar position. I was looking at the s21. Is it best to find a 5g enabled one now?

BlueBloodedBlue · 01/01/2022 22:20

Anyone have the Samsung A52s and can recommend or otherwise please?

wolfstarling · 02/01/2022 11:09

@twilightcafe

The S9 is solid. The sound and speakers are superior. The S20s are tinny and distorted if you look at online reviews this is a problem I think it is due to their position.

If the next Samsung have sorted this issue out, I will upgrade. You need to look at the online tech reviews.

WhatsitWiggle · 03/01/2022 17:03

@BlueBloodedBlue I don't like mine, the camera is superior to the S9 but it's slower for apps, won't work with my printer for pdfs, and is slightly larger which I find a bit tricky for holding. If I'd upgraded from another A range, I think it would have been fine, but I really wish I'd just changed the battery on my S9 and gone sim-only (I upgraded instore so no cooling off period, won't do that again!).
