I am melting. Melting.

I keep taking out the recycling to get a breath of air

DSIL turns the thermostat down when they're not looking.

WizbitsLeftEye · 26/12/2021 15:07

Same problem whilst staying with my parents last night.

It's the same house I grew up in and my dad has always had an issue with drafts and lower temperatures.

Which is bad for me because despite what my joints do in the cold, my dysautonomia says no to warmth and makes me pass out. And I have to have even just a little fresh air from a crack in a window etc.

Didn't sleep last night. But we had an amazing one.

CatherinedeBourgh · 26/12/2021 15:08

I have this in almost everyone’s house.

I hate central heating.

MonicaGellerBing · 26/12/2021 15:09

My parents house is the same, I sneakily turn the thermostat down when they aren't looking or I end up falling asleep because of the heat!

thespyglass · 26/12/2021 15:09

It's 'only' at 22 now. It was at 24 last night Shock

FIL is wearing a cardigan!

Omg OP 22! I feel for you.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 26/12/2021 15:11

My mums house is like this. We all went down to see her yesterday evening and within 15 minutes the babies were overpowered and grumpy and everyone was pulling at their collar. I'm glad she's cosy but it's a bit much!

Driposaurus · 26/12/2021 15:12

I didn’t realise my inlaws have company this year. What I particularly like is the way they have hermetically sealed the main (large) living space - there are no opening windows, the (all interior) doors have draught excluders - so that no where is there any air that moves.

DragonMamma · 26/12/2021 15:13

My grandparents are the same and have it on a steady 25c. We just tell them we are about to pass out and turn it down. They get colder because they are infirm but as we are there to provide care we are running around after them so they can suck it up. They do sit there in short sleeve tops so we make them layer up and pop a blanket on whilst we are there doing stuff for them.

It makes us feel quite unwell.

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/12/2021 15:13

24 isn’t hot that a normal room temperature. Op wear a t shirt and be thankful you are not paying to heat your own home. It’s December!

Marmite27 · 26/12/2021 15:14

My parents have a log burner.

I think my dad is practicing for his eternal rest in fiery he’ll with Satan.

We pack shorts and T-shirt’s Confused

Piginablankie · 26/12/2021 15:14

I popped into my neighbours house on Xmas eve to deliver presents.. Thermostat was at 27!!!!

Namechangeforthis88 · 26/12/2021 15:15

24 is not normal.

RandomMess · 26/12/2021 15:15

In struggle at 24 outside in summer!!

Ibane · 26/12/2021 15:17

My parents’ house is like this. I found my nine year old stripped down to shorts and tshirt running cold water over his hands in the bathroom last week.

thespyglass · 26/12/2021 15:17

27 Shock

HangingOutWithTheSandman · 26/12/2021 15:17

22 is within the recommended temperature for a living room. Ours is usually about that if we’re sitting.

itsgettingweird · 26/12/2021 15:19

Ventilation ventilation ventilation.

It's the one time we can get those windows open with a real reason!

My thermostat is set at 20. Sometimes turn it down to 19 or up to 21.

21/22° is comfortable when just sitting in a non crowded room imo.

But far too hot without ventilation and when crowded and eating.

dinahsdishes · 26/12/2021 15:20

24 is not normal! Anything more than 19 and I start wilting

18- 21 is normal

And a study from housing expert Richard Moore outlines exactly what damage can be caused by having homes at certain temperatures;
• 24°C+ – Cardiovascular risk of strokes and heart attacks
• 21-24°C – Increasing discomfort
• 18-21°C – Comfortable temperatures
• 16-18°C – Discomfort, small health risks
• 12-16°C – Risk of respiratory diseases
• 9-12°C – Risk of strokes, heart attacks

We're at the IL's too and it varies from freezing cold all day to unbearably hot in the evening when the log burner is lit (at 5pm on the dot, not a moment sooner even though we are cold during the day).

toomuchlaundry · 26/12/2021 15:21

Our thermostat is usually about 22. I can still be in a jumper, with blanket and sometimes wrist warmers and still be cold. I feel the cold, DH does not. Was waiting for hot flushes through the menopause, but even though I pretty much have had all other symptoms haven’t had them! Mind if I get too hot I faint.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 26/12/2021 15:24

I reminded DH to wear a short sleeved shirt yesterday when we were heading to my parents.

I wore a dress without the thermal top I would normally wear underneath it at this time of year.

To be fair their mobility is declining so they are just sat down most of the time.

thespyglass · 26/12/2021 15:27

Ventilation is a good point. There's a window open in the kitchen and living room, I'm going to be brave and open another one...

My IL are here and FIL keeps ramping up the log burner to get it to 25 🤯 I’ve had to vacate the room…

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 26/12/2021 15:34

Lord. My parents are about 21 and it is warm although their house is much less well insulated than mine so it fades pretty quick.

Mines usually only set at about 18 downstairs and pretty much never comes on upstairs. Not sure what it’s set to - think 16-17 but it never actually drops cold enough for it to come on.
