Is there a thing in your house , or something you've always wanted , that makes your home feel finished or

" posh " ?
For me it was going to a friends house as a child , and seeing they had a doorbell . We never had one as at my parents house , and when first married and in rented houses never had one . Once in our own home , having a doorbell makes my day ! ( Told you it was daft )Grin

Coffee from a cafetiere always feels posh to me. And avocado, specially when I have a whole one all to myself Grin

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/12/2021 14:35

@toots111

So if people didn’t have doorbells what did they have? I grew up in a council flat so definitely not posh but we had a doorbell on our flat door (it was on an open walkway - post war council block) just a door knocker? I never thought of doorbells as posh. That said, ours was one you had to wind up and we always forgot and mostly people would be banging on the door shouting.
Not even a door knocker! Just a door Grin people would just have to knock on it (quite loudly!)
WhatAHexIGotInto · 26/12/2021 14:35

@AbandonedCharacter not really, so I'm kind of letting the side down there. Grin

boobot1 · 26/12/2021 14:37

@Tippytaps

Something I have never had but feel would be revolutionary in my life is a dishwasher. DH is not keen so probably won’t ever happen, but I can dream :)
I have had one for years and have never used it, waste of space.
AbandonedCharacter · 26/12/2021 14:37

@WhatAHexIGotInto 🤣 Surely you should be calling out terribly posh names as you stride across the fields?

I'm sure they have lovely names!

HipposHaveNipples · 26/12/2021 14:37

Having lovely curtains - growing up we always had rubbishy thin curtains, now I have beautiful thick, lined curtains. They are lovely to look at and keep the light out and the heat in.

Westfacing · 26/12/2021 14:39

My Brabantia bin - it's about 6 years old now. When I first got it used to press the lid when passing just for the thrill of it opening!

I still lovingly wipe it all over when changing the bag.

I've arrived!

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/12/2021 14:40

Real Christmas trees. Were they just less of a 'thing' back in the 90s?

2bazookas · 26/12/2021 14:43

I've no wish or need to feel "posh".

I am myself, no more no less.

Ferrero Rocher because the Ambassador's receptions are noted in society for their host's exquisite taste that captivates his guests and he used to serve a pyramid of them

So if people didn’t have doorbells what did they have?

Knuckles. You still have knuckles, don't you?

NettleMania · 26/12/2021 14:46

Shopping at Waitrose.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/12/2021 14:47

Carpet that goes to the sides of the room, underneath the door and feels like carpet rather than a slightly lumpy skinned bit of sacking with wool trimmings stuck to it in places.

Just10moreminutesplease · 26/12/2021 14:48

When I was little I was desperate to live in a block of flats near me that had balconies. I thought they were so posh!

Looking back they were incredibly run down and should probably have been torn down.

SocialConnection · 26/12/2021 14:50

Cafetiere coffee (Co-op)
Scented candles and wax melts (Glade)
One wall completely covered in books
Pots of herbs on kitchen windowsill (Aldi)

I have these things to paper over the fact that the house is the worst looking in the street and I have toothache because I can't afford decorator and dentist

mm40 · 26/12/2021 14:51

Dualit toaster and kettle,
Kitchenaid mixer,
AEG kitchen appliances
Heat pump tumble dryer
Fancy smart washing machine.

Basically everyday stuff that just does it’s job without wishing you had a better one.

Justleaveitblankthen · 26/12/2021 14:55

Another PP has remained me - having a Golden Retriever ( as one of my dogs Smile )
People always react very positively to Golden Retriever or Labrador owners.
We could be your local vicar or dignified gentry don't you know 😉

Lovemylittlebear · 26/12/2021 14:57

Avocado 🥑

PeacheyPeach · 26/12/2021 15:01

Kitchen roll! Always get a bit of a thrill when I use this as this seemed the height of luxury when I was little ( and poor!)
Going on a foreign holiday still seems a real posh treat to me, I love that journey to the air port. I remember when kids in our road would be going on holiday or would come back with real tans and I always felt a bit envious but in my head told myself this would happen to me when I was older!!

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 26/12/2021 15:02

You can’t ask about “posh” on here. You’re about to get bashed cos ANY thing someone says is posh, will be berated cos those who don’t think so will assume you’re calling them “common” or “slobs” or some such other non-stated nor insinuated slur.

icedcoffees · 26/12/2021 15:03

Having croissants for breakfast at the weekend.

iklboodolphrednosedpaindear · 26/12/2021 15:04

When I was little a very posh tea when my grandparents came round (eg Dad got a bonus) was:

Tinned red salmon
Salad with cucumber
Hovis brown bread, with real butter, cut diagonally
Trifle to follow

Tinned red salmon still makes me feel a little bit 'posh'.

Also, chicken was expensive and actually given as a prize at the bingo hall my nana went to 😂.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/12/2021 15:06

Kitchen roll
Sellotape. I am not sure if it was extremely costly in the 70s, but I have vivid memories of it being rationed. Although to be honest, I can’t think of anything I would have needed it for

OMICHristmasOn · 26/12/2021 15:07

@Tippytaps, make the decision and get the dishwasher and make your life easier. same with any domestic appliances. used to work in a well known dept.store and the amount of conversations that included - i will need to run it past DH/DW was staggering.
buying a meal deal from markies for me.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 26/12/2021 15:07

Having an Eastpak backpack instead of a shitty one from a market stall. I wanted one SO BADLY as a teenager, but my Mum said they were a waste of money.

I know this is actually the antithesis of posh, but having a big TV. There was a girl I was at school with who's parents were surgeons and they had a massive Telly and it felt like the most luxurious thing. I now have a massive TV and I love it Grin
