Baby fixating on things

Not sure where best to post this. My baby is 12 weeks old. For the past 3-4 weeks he gets very fixated on objects for example behind the sofa is a hanging plant he stares at it for ages, he has a chair with 2 hanging things, stares at them for ages too. He was screaming the house down last night so my partner but him in his crib with his new mobile above him, stopped crying pretty much straight away and was staring watching the hanging things go round and very excitingly kicking his legs and arms, we kept winding it up for over half an hour he loved it that much. My SIL bought him a flashing singing zebra and everytime we get it out he smiles away at it and stares at it, sometimes it's the only thing that will stop him crying. Also loves his play mat as he can stare at the hanging toys. He kicks his legs so quick it looks like he's riding a bike 😂

None of that would concern me and I would like it be normal behaviour however I have a group of mum friends who say their babies aren't interested in toys yet at all and only interested in people/faces. I have a friend with an older son who said her son was like that at this age and is now autistic so of course that's got my very concerned, like a seed planted. Is this normal behaviour? He does also smile at us/family members. I'm just not sure if the fixation on objects is normal. FTM who worries about a lot!

It's so normal dont worry!

It sounds about right to me. At that age baby's vision is improving - can see further away, see moving objects, distinguish between patterns and bright colours. Anything that stimulates other senses - sound, lights etc is going to attract their attention.

Normal. It's fine nothing to worry about

Baby mobiles etc were invented exactly because babies act like this! Your baby sounds totally normal

CandyCaneLane0 · 26/12/2021 12:41

It's completely normal

Jup, normal behaviour here as well. Everything is new and much more fascinating to them than to us. Enjoy seeing the world in a new way again through them!
