What is the best self-help book you've ever read?

I have an Amazon gift card and I'm thinking of buying a self-help book. This Christmas has felt like a wake up call and a bit of a rock bottom moment and I need to change and I'd love a book to just help give me the push I need

OP posts:

The Road Less Travelled, M. Scott Peck

I like Atomic Habits by James Clear and the classic Feel the Fear and do it Anyway by Susan Jeffers.

Happy by Derren Brown. Literally changed my life.

Oliver Burkeman Four Thousand Weeks - takes much more of a big picture view of what to do with your life. Also like Gretchen Rubin.

Is there anything in particular you want to work on?

A Woman In Your Own Right by Anne Dickson. It's about assertiveness but not just as a way to behave, but to see yourself and understand yourself as well, specifically as a woman who's been socialised to serve everyone and not cause offence. I read it first as a teenager and it made a huge difference to how I coped with my difficult family - but I still re-read it as a reminder.

MzMaria · 25/12/2021 23:02

Hands down: You are a badass.

It makes you feel awesome and she's got a very relatable story to tell.

Atomic habits is good but it's also kinda obvious and so many people have covered his content now. Just read his blog, sign up to his mailing list and buy You are a Badass 😊

You could also get a year’s Blinkist subscription for about £60 but not using Amazon voucher

DratTheCatInHisHat · 25/12/2021 23:10

Hen2018 · 25/12/2021 23:39

Feel the Fear and do it Anyway. It’s the only self help book where the advice has stuck in my mind long term!

1concernedmummy · 25/12/2021 23:47

Feel the fear and do it anyway.

And if you are in a relationship with a guy that is stringing you along, 'He's just not that into you'.

DecayedStrumpet · 25/12/2021 23:59

I also liked Happy by Derren Brown. It's kind of about how the things you think will make you happy actually don't, and how to to chill out and stop letting things get to you.
(Er, other people may have taken different things from it)

But what is it you actually want to change, OP? If you want to achieve great things, stop putting up with crappy men, feel better about yourself, run a marathon... those are all different book recommendations!

blueshoes · 26/12/2021 00:01

I see Lundy Bancroft "Why does he do that" recommended so many times on mn.

Pyewacket: How to fight your demons

It really helped me, my favourite bit of advice being to sit outside and have a banana every time I felt sad. I now have potassium poisoning but I’m very happy overall

How to do everything and be happy by peter jones.

Atomic Habits - James Clear.

Allsorts1 · 26/12/2021 00:12

The Four Agreements. It’s not a self help book really but definitely shaped my life philosophy and you can use them every day to be a better person.
