What is the best self-help book you've ever read?

I have an Amazon gift card and I'm thinking of buying a self-help book. This Christmas has felt like a wake up call and a bit of a rock bottom moment and I need to change and I'd love a book to just help give me the push I need

I really enjoyed A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle

Rather than buy a bazillion books @christma try these videos - they will answer a lot of your questions;

Part 1 Part 2

@Shallwegoforawalk

Yes I’ve read all of them although I prefer to listen to them as she reads them herself and I find it more relatable. I’ve recently read the high five habit and am about to reread it so I can break it down into the bits that interest me. If you’re only going to read one, go for “the 5 second rule”

I think it depends on what sort of self help you are looking for. If it is support with anxiety, agoraphobia etc then Dr Claire Weeks books, cds and dvd are brilliant. They are self help for your nerves and more help for your nerves. They were written in the 70s and 80s but her methods still apply and work. For panic attacks, Sue Bretons books dont panic and why worry are excellent. There is alosa website called living life to the full.

Thank you @NotSorry

I’d like to recommend Pete Walker’s ‘From Surviving to Thriving’ for anyone who suffered childhood neglect or an abusive parent as well as ‘Running On Empty’ by Dr Jonice Webb which focuses on Childhood emotional neglect.

@Graphista

Feel the fear and do it anyway - Susan Jeffers

Read it years ago I have terrible ocd and it really genuinely helped

So much so I feel I need to read it again i may buy it on my own kindle

Atomic habits I've seen recommended a lot

I also read Feel the Fear many, many years ago and it had a profound effect on me (helped me realise I had to leave an abusive man) I recently bought it again to re-read. (I'm happy and settled now) I lasted about 2 chapters before I had to stop. I absolutely hated it! I can only conclude that at the right time, this book is amazing, but the rest of the time, it's hideous.

I would recommend The Chimp Paradox and anything by Brene Brown.

parrotonmyshoulder · 27/12/2021 19:27

Brene Browne reading her own work on audible is great.

parrotonmyshoulder · 27/12/2021 19:29

I also like Marshall Rosenberg ‘Nonviolent Communication’ although I find it difficult to practice.
Second The Body Keeps the Score above too.

TheCreamCaker · 27/12/2021 19:40

I don't know if it'd be classed as a self-help book but 12 Rules for Life, an antidote for chaos, by Jordan Peterson

Vapeyvapevape · 27/12/2021 19:51

@PainterInPeril We learn about why we are here, the purpose of life, why things went wrong, how/when it will be put right (spoiler alert....very soon!)

Spill the beans ! How will it be put right ?

PainterInPeril · 27/12/2021 21:53

@Vapeyvapevape Well, obviously you have to read it to find out! 😁 I find jw.org a very helpful guide to understanding the Bible.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/12/2021 22:21

@HerBigChance

Agree with a number of these. I have Atomic Habits and the Happiness Project on my Libby app waiting list.

I think sometimes people are dismissive of self-help books, but even if you only take away two or three things from them, they can change things. Even small changes in the way you do things can affect other people's interactions with you.

Google atomic habits pdf, click first link. Whole books there.
