Programming the TV to record on VHS..

Ipods..

Renting a dvd from the shop..

Decorating a room and having one colour at the bottom with a paler version at the top separated with a pretty boarder..

What are yours?

We still have a landline and use it as the signal is so poor in our house.

We often use it to call for a takeaway that we then go and collect and pay cash for, because it's quicker and cheaper.

I also don't agree with the deliveroo etc business model so I'd rather not use it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/12/2021 09:39

I bought them from a local garden centre.

I also bought some from Chatsworth Garden Centre.

I have a bit of a thing for baubles😳

GameofPhones · 24/12/2021 09:56

@AnotherOneWithNoGoodName

I still use cash wherever I can!

Lets see... landlines. Loads of people don't seem to have a landline now.

Encyclopaedias.
Having a bin calendar from the local council stuck somewhere so you knew when the bin days were even with bank holidays!

Re glass baubles, this is a really recent change ime. Most of my decorations came from Wilko about six years ago - pretty, simple but cheap glass baubles. We also had some really nice glittery birds from Homebase. Now glass is the preserve of gift shops and John Lewis, and the baubles start at about £6-7. They’re also often huge, so weigh the tree branches down too much.

Common sense

ddl1 · 24/12/2021 10:04

@dadofthewest

Common sense
I wouldn't say that had ever been common!

Encyclopaedias date very quickly. You can find all the up to date authoritative information on the internet. It's not all nonsense in the tabloids and on social media and in webforums.

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 10:05

@TheAntiGardener yes that is what I want. Plain simple glass ones, they are elegant and were cheap. All I see now are coloured glass ones that are gaudy.
I have just been onto Chatsworth website and the glass baubles are either coloured or painted. The ones I want look like modern plastic silver baubles, but they are glass. The tree lights reflect better off the glass ones. I got my last set in ASDA and they were dirt cheap. But they are delicate and break easily.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/12/2021 10:05

Glass baubles chosen by Dd. About £3-4 from garden centres.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow thanks but not what I want. This is what I wanted. You can get them it seems, but you have to pay shipping tax as they come from abroad.

They sell boxes like that in garden centres.

Britannica is online, and I often find it better for introducing topics than Wikipedia now. Wikipedia was taken over by a load of wannabe academics, desperate to prove its reliability, and is covered with detail, arguments and sources. Britannica is written by people who know how to write an introduction. Just saying.

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 10:45

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow okay I will have a look thanks

ParsleySageRosemary · 24/12/2021 10:48

Other things that seem antiquated: the ability of people to talk and communicate information! Everything is about selling something or servicing some ideology or other.

Having computer files in anything that are not saved on some remote cloud service. I don’t care how efficient it is, I don’t like it.

80sMum · 24/12/2021 10:59

Knowing all my family's and friends' addresses and phone numbers by heart.

Being able to look up someone's address and phone number in the telephone directory.

MissBattleaxe · 24/12/2021 11:00

smoking indoors. It seems like madness that it was ever allowed, but not so long ago you'd have ashtrays in restaurants - unthinkable now!

etulosba · 24/12/2021 11:00

We still have a landline and use it as the signal is so poor in our house.

We had that problem until we got phones that automatically switch to wifi calling when the mobile signal is poor.

We keep the landline phone because it costs nothing and it means we can give out a phone number without fear of being subsequently inundated with nuisance calls on our mobiles. The call guardian blocks them all.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/12/2021 11:07

Thanks for that @etulosba.

I'm actually thinking of getting a new phone at the moment but am a bit baffled about which of all the features I actually want. Automatically using wifi for calls would be on the list.

Paving slabs on pavements rather than tarmac. Just looking at some old family photos, many taken outside, and all the streets have proper paving slabs.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 24/12/2021 11:08

@JaneJeffer

Being able to buy CDs, DVDs and video games for Christmas presents. Everything is online now.
Or even books. It's quite difficult buying Christmas presents these days, I had to ban my husband from buying any books online for his kindle for the six weeks up to Christmas :)
JuergenSchwarzwald · 24/12/2021 11:10

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Plug in earphones.

Whenever I’m out l just see loads of people with little white blobs in their ears.

I still have a wired set, as well as Amazon earpods, but I prefer the wired ones.
SocialConnection · 24/12/2021 11:10

Knowing what would be on telly that night without looking at the Radio Times

pluggee · 24/12/2021 11:11

I prefer wired as I like to take them out if in a shop or walking alone, I would lose the wireless ones.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 24/12/2021 11:12

Pondering when will stamps become redundant, only used by collectors and christmas / birthday cards. Waiting for QR codes to replace Stamps

I saw a thing on Twitter the other day where you can write a code on the envelope where the stamp would go. I think it was in the Netherlands.
