Does your (office job) let you finish early on Xmas Eve and NYE?

I've always worked in office environments and never finished later than 12pm in the past on Xmas Eve - it's always been a bit of a jolly, and then management tells everyone to go home just before lunch.

I've just found out my current place "might" let us go at 4pm, which is 45 minutes early Shock this seemed really stingy to me so I'm wondering if it's unusual or I've just been lucky at all my previous jobs.

What does your workplace do?

Reading this truly makes me realise how very very very lucky I am in my lovely job

Finish around midday 23rd. And then fully paid until 5th Jan, and do not need to even take as any annual leave.

Plus I got a weeks bonus

Plus I am only part time

One office I worked in used to let us go at 1pm, until everyone copped on and started flexing their hourss, insisting on an early finish on the 23rd because "I'll stay til 6.30pm tomorrow". Cheeky buggers ruined it for us all Hmm and we all had to stay til 5pm on 24th.

We usually have to take annual leave, but there is a policy to cover directed days. I think this is fair. Allowing people to leave at 12 not fair on those on leave or part time.

Christmas Eve we finish at lunchtime, so basically you are not expected to work after 1pm. Last year I was told my lunchtime is an hour so log off at noon Xmas Smile

New Years is different, no official early finish. I suspect if going out colleagues use lieu time to finish early.

OfMinceAndMen · 24/12/2021 07:32

Yes 12noon for me

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/12/2021 07:36

Half a day on Christmas Eve if you come in. Nothing if you have booked it off.

Nothing on NYE.

Sunbeams09 · 24/12/2021 07:37

I get a list of my teams preferences on which they’d want to finish early (NYE or Xmas) and make a rota, I try and give everyone at least one 12pm finish, I also monitor through the afternoon and let more go at 3pm if we are quiet but there is no guarantees on that. Sometimes I will log onto the phones myself to let more people go because I am a great boss 😁

Our office shut yesterday and doesn't reopen until the 4th - additional to AL!

llanfairfechan24 · 24/12/2021 08:40

Usually early afternoon.

TabbyM · 24/12/2021 12:31

No because they are evil :(.

Previous job always done by 2 pm!

Ozgirl75 · 24/12/2021 12:34

I run a business and we close on 23 until 4 Jan this year, no need for staff to take it as leave, plus they get a hamper AND a £500 Christmas bonus.

Bunnycat101 · 24/12/2021 12:59

It’s often been tricky as people get annoyed they’ve taken annual leave if you let those working go too early. I haven’t worked Christmas Eve for years but I’ve previously sent people home at 2 as early but not quite as early as the people who have taken 1/2 day AL.

One year I was really annoyed as was working from home and no-one told me all the office staff had buggered off hours before. I was doing stuff until about 4 when I noticed all of the ooo emails coming and gave up.

coochyboochy · 24/12/2021 13:06

It needs to be booked off the in the usual way- if you have enough leave or flexi time and there are enough staff in. We do try to give people an equal crack of the whip ref time off over the Xmas & New Year period.

Harpydragon · 24/12/2021 13:10

First Christmas in a new job. The boss is off so I asked what his thoughts on it were. The answer, the part timer gives me too much grief about full time staff having extra "holiday" if they leave early, so full hours it is because he doesn't want to upset the apple cart🙄

coochyboochy · 24/12/2021 13:10

To add though: our admin staff work for a civil service dept which is open 24 hours a day- no Xmas closing hours.
