Does your (office job) let you finish early on Xmas Eve and NYE?

I've always worked in office environments and never finished later than 12pm in the past on Xmas Eve - it's always been a bit of a jolly, and then management tells everyone to go home just before lunch.

I've just found out my current place "might" let us go at 4pm, which is 45 minutes early Shock this seemed really stingy to me so I'm wondering if it's unusual or I've just been lucky at all my previous jobs.

What does your workplace do?

No, normal working day for us.

LaBelleSausage · 23/12/2021 08:39

Officially no early finish on either day.

Realistically it's at the discretion of your line manager.

Footprintsinthegrass · 23/12/2021 08:41

Last day today and closed until the 4th

ChimChimeny · 23/12/2021 08:42

People usually start sloping off around 3pm, one year the manager acted like he was doing us a favour letting us go at 4pm when people start finishing from 4.30 anyway.

I finish at 2pm but never get to finish early even though full timers do.

Since having DD I always take Christmas Eve off, working NYE but because I'll be at home I'll start a bit later & finish at the same time as it's usually really quiet

My last company did not finish early, so I ended up working til 5.30pm last year on Xmas eve - I was not in a great mood tbh. We didn't even get a selection box or any words of recognition for working so hard through a difficult year.

I'm with a new company and it seems a bit more relaxed, basically sounds like if your work is done then you can start finishing early which is great!

Enko · 23/12/2021 08:45

If we want time off we book it if not we work our hours

mumonthehill · 23/12/2021 08:46

Finish 12 pm Christmas Eve and then we are gifted the work days between Christmas and new year. As we had quite a bit of flexi to take I actually finished yesterday.

Marvel23 · 23/12/2021 08:47

My office is closed xmas eve and days between xmas and new year. We don't use annual leave for these days. Good for me as have kids but others would prefer a bonus

ceeveebee · 23/12/2021 08:49

We officially get the afternoon off on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. We used to just unofficially let people go early but that seemed unfair on those who have booked the whole day off, so we made it a formal thing

Aposterhasnoname · 23/12/2021 08:51

The last place was 4pm if we were lucky. Where I am now midday is considered a late finish, and we certainly don’t do any work.

HopefulProcrastinator · 23/12/2021 08:52

Never expected to work later than 2pm on Christmas Eve, no special favours for New Years Eve - you'd have to book that off as annual leave.

The bit that always causes tension though is that you don't use annual leave to finish at 2pm or earlier, but you have to use a full day of annual leave to take the day off...no exception or half days allowed.

I think it's perfectly fair, the Christmas Eve 'bonus' is for people who turn up and I'm someone that always books the day off losing a full day of annual leave.

CormoranStrike · 23/12/2021 08:54

We finish early if we are genuinely finished with the work for the day.

I have worked like a demon all this week in the hope of letting me and my team (I’m the manager) have an early finishing time tomorrow.

StrawberryJamSandwiches · 23/12/2021 08:56

We finish today, back on 4th Jan. Last year they gifted us all the 23rd so we got to finish 22nd. We use annual leave for days between Christmas and New year but honestly, my last job you wouldnt even be able to book proper holidays off at Christmas and we had to have cover for boxing day. Also, had to work completely as normal up until 5:30, whether it was Christmas eve/boxing day/new years eve
It was truly depressing. I love love love that the office is closed and would hate to go back to a place that doesn't have Christmas shut down.

JufusMum · 23/12/2021 08:57

Normal finish time here. NHS.

Constance1 · 23/12/2021 08:58

We finish on the 23rd and not back until the 4th Jan! (university based admin job)

StrawberryJamSandwiches · 23/12/2021 08:58

^also, to answer your actual question Grin, I will be working up until 5pm as normal today.

hauntedvagina · 23/12/2021 09:03

I've been working in office jobs for twenty years and have never worked past 12pm on Christmas Eve, in massive corporates and smaller businesses.

However... all businesses have had the unwritten rule whereby you cannot take half a day on Christmas Eve, if you want it off, it's a full days leave.

Crunchymum · 23/12/2021 09:05

Christmas Eve tends to be busy (I support the sales team and this tends to be the last day they pull their big deals in) so whilst we've always been allowed to WFH, we could still be on at 6pm Shock

Similar story for NYE (I also support the finance team so I am frantically prepping for year end)

We do however get any days we work back in lieu in Q1. I am finished now until 29th but I'll have 3 extra days leave leave 2022.

WhatIsThisPlease · 23/12/2021 09:08

We get a half day given on Christmas and New Year's Eve. If you want to book the day off you only have to use half a day's annual leave.

dementedma · 23/12/2021 09:11

12 o clock finish on the last day, which was yesterday, and off now until Jan 5th.

MrsDThomas · 23/12/2021 09:11

Local government so no. The public complain as it is that they cant get hold of someone (we also complain as staff) on a daily basis, but im in the office and do over my allotted hours so im in till 5 on Friday and NYE.

wendz86 · 23/12/2021 09:12

Normally we can finish at lunch Christmas Eve. This year they have let us have it off . We always get between Christmas and new year off without needing to use annual leave .

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 23/12/2021 09:14

Christmas Eve, yes, NYE, no. Private company.

thevassal · 23/12/2021 09:15

Current job they give us the afternoon of Christmas eve off as additional leave. Every other day is normal working days but it's flexi time so you can finish whenever you wanted, but obviously the clock stops then so you have to make up the hours at some point.

Tbf we get a lot of leave so most people have taken the 2 weeks (before, and between Christmas and NY) off anyway.

bluetongue · 23/12/2021 09:31

Usually yes but more than half of my office is isolating at the moment and it’s pretty busy right up to Christmas Eve. My aim was to get all my work caught up before coming back on January 4 but no chance if that now.
