Does your (office job) let you finish early on Xmas Eve and NYE?

I've always worked in office environments and never finished later than 12pm in the past on Xmas Eve - it's always been a bit of a jolly, and then management tells everyone to go home just before lunch.

I've just found out my current place "might" let us go at 4pm, which is 45 minutes early Shock this seemed really stingy to me so I'm wondering if it's unusual or I've just been lucky at all my previous jobs.

What does your workplace do?

Ours always finishes at 12 - they are shut down till the new year and the facilities team want everyone out so they can get the whole place shut down, water off, fridges and lockers cleared out etc and get off themselves.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/12/2021 09:34

It used to let us go about 2 pm. We'd all be chilling out waiting for the official email telling us to go home.

My husband usually get the day off as an extra paid holiday when the pay rise is negotiated.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/12/2021 09:50

Yes we can finish at lunchtime.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/12/2021 09:51

@Sunsetsupernova

We usually finish at lunchtime on Christmas Eve which really pisses off the people who have taken annual leave for the day. Then NYE we’re off anyway as they give us the days between Christmas and New Years off for free.
If anyone where I work has taken annual leave on that day we can take the half day another time.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/12/2021 09:51

Every year, total confusion, with different departments 'being released' at random times. (Admittedly some warehouse staff start at 6:00 am.) Little work is done as everyone is milling about asking what's happening and looking out the window to see if another department is leaving, and seemingly the Managers daren't make a decision.

The Directors all 'work from home' on these days...Hmm

yellowglass · 23/12/2021 16:58

Have been finishing early all week , 3pm ish

Christmas Eve we only go to the office to meet up so we can go over the local pub for breakfast , finish around 11am and that's that for the year .

We all work from home the week in between Christmas and new year , due to the nature of our jobs we are on call 24hrs a day 7 days a week all year round so our boss positively encourages as much down time as we can sneak in before duty calls .

Wouldn't ever want to work anywhere else !

thatsallineed · 23/12/2021 17:02

Tomorrow I finish at 12, and the company closes between Christmas and New Year anyway, so I'll go back in on 4th Jan.

DramaAlpaca · 23/12/2021 17:04

My employers aren't consistent. Sometimes we get Xmas Eve off as an additional day but other years we have to use holiday. This year we had to use holiday but we all finished up at lunchtime yesterday.

LER83 · 23/12/2021 17:12

My dh's boss decided he wanted to close the office on the 17th this year, and everyone has to take it as annual leave, they aren't back until the 4th Jan, so thats 8 days of annual leave used when normally they only have to use 3!!

TorySteller · 23/12/2021 17:59

At my last place we were usually allowed to leave sometime between 12-2 on Christmas Eve and NYE. All seemed to depend on which manager was making the decision Hmm

It seems so pointless making people come in for a day when hardly any work gets done (I appreciate this isn’t the case in some environments though). I always felt really bitter that I was spending Christmas Eve in the office, twiddling my thumbs, with all my work for the year tied up, waiting to be ‘told’ I could leave. Such a waste of precious time that could’ve been spent with family (we weren’t normally allowed to book it off either).

ImInStealthMode · 23/12/2021 18:02

We always close around 1pm. Controversially anyone who wants Christmas Eve off has to use a full day of leave, despite us only being open a half day Hmm

hopeishere · 23/12/2021 18:52

Yes. But as someone who takes AL so I can have the day off it does annoy me.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 23/12/2021 18:53

That's really festive of you
SockFluffInTheBath · 23/12/2021 18:58

In normal times my Senior Manager walks the office at midday, thanks us for working hard through the year, and tells us to clear off so he can go home. Teams message this year Xmas Smile

I can understand that, but if you know it happens then it is your choice, and you’re only being diddled out of a couple of hours.
OddBoots · 23/12/2021 19:05

Not in my office as it's one of our busiest days.

Corrag · 23/12/2021 19:13

We've been given both as extra days off this year.

Netry · 23/12/2021 19:24

We get it off every year. Not annual leave, just a day off to get our food shop done

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/12/2021 19:37

We are closed from 22nd December to 4th January (5th for the Scots) but work till 5pm on 22nd.

No annual leave required for the break.

BlueThursday · 23/12/2021 19:46

It’s technically a half day where I work tomorrow (a bank) but none of us actually stop till we get the things we need doing finished as customers rely on us

hopeishere · 23/12/2021 22:30

Ha! I know I'm the grinch and yeah I accept it's my choice!!

Fastforwardtospring · 23/12/2021 22:35

Only work until lunch time on Fridays anyway, we’ll be let go about 11 I guess, we normally do whatever day Christmas Eve falls on. I have to work a few hours each day in between though, from home, so not too bad.

LBOCS2 · 23/12/2021 22:39

We've had official notification come around to say that we're finishing at 3pm tomorrow - which is the latest I've seen it actually, in pre-Covid times we'd be in the pub by 1.30...

CurbsideProphet · 23/12/2021 22:45

As far as I'm aware it's a normal work day - charity sector, everyone WFH. We finished an hour ish early last year, but we weren't given much notice. Communication isn't great when it comes to things like this.

CatNameChange101 · 23/12/2021 23:45

I get paid double time the full day and told to finish at one…
