Random check with scan as you shop

Summerofcontent · 22/12/2021 21:14

I was in Tesco this morning doing my Christmas food shop and the people at the next checkout got a random check.
They had 3 trolley loads and refused the check.
They just walked out leaving their shopping at the checkout.
I was wondering whether these people will now have a mark put on their clubcard so they get checked each time or whether they'll just carry on being selected randomly.
Does anyone know?

I’ve not used Tesco for S&S but Waitrose and Sainsbury’s only do a random selection of goods and as long as they are all scanned you are good to go.

Now why might people refuse that, I wonder?

BurntO · 22/12/2021 21:23

They’ll be marked as having abandoned their shopping so they won’t be able to pick up a scanner next time without speaking to a customer assistant. They will also likely be triggered for a check next time too.

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 22/12/2021 21:23

no, i think you'll be fine

3 trolleys though!?

DismantledKing · 22/12/2021 21:25

Sainsbury’s only check 10 random items in the trolley; I can’t imagine that Tesco would be much different. I’d ban them from the shop in future, they were obviously up to something.

KilmordenCastle · 22/12/2021 21:26

No idea but that's interesting isn't it. They must have been not scanning items to be willing to walk away after doing 3 trolleys worth of shopping. I really hope whatever fridge/freezer stuff they had doesn't have to be wasted but I suspect it might be. Plus I feel sorry for the poor sod who had to put it all back.

I had my Xmas shop selected for a random check last year and I'd bloody forgotten to scan the milk so they had to scan every single item. Turns out it was only the milk I'd forgotten but it was a huge shop so took forever to scan every item. It was a PITA as the Christmas shop is always quite stressful anyway what with it being so busy so I just wanted to get home. I felt really guilty and kept apologising to the woman who had to sort it.

Done the Xmas shop today and I was expecting a random check again but thankfully it went through fine and was quick and easy Grin

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 22/12/2021 21:27

I highly suspect that they hadn’t scanned half their stuff through!

Summerofcontent · 22/12/2021 21:28

I was selected too and they scanned about 20 items.

They had loads of meat and alcohol

A couple of years ago, I once got stopped for a random check in Tesco and, typically, I'd forgotten to scan one of the items they checked (nothing expensive, something daft like a yoghurt, I think I'd bought two but only scanned one). So they had to do a complete rescan of everything I'd bought, fair enough, everything else was scanned. However, for the next few times after that I got stopped for a 'random' check every time so there is definitely something that registers on your card to say you have the potential to be dodgy.

I can't think of any other reason to walk away from your shopping

I abandoned my 1 trolley in waitrose, it was 3 scans in a row, I was fed up, had two toddlers, a builder at home to get back to and just couldn't deal with it. The woman started scanning every single item to check it at super slow speed. I had to leave. Won't self scan ever again.

TurquoiseDragon · 22/12/2021 21:34

I bet they were trying to steal the expensive stuff.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 22/12/2021 21:34

Funnily enough I was in Tesco tonight and got selected for a check and she came over to do it and said ‘is it okay if I check your shop?’ then she said ‘I always ask that but I don’t know what I’d actually do if someone said no’.

It’s obvious they’d not scanned all their shopping isn’t it.

00100001 · 22/12/2021 21:36

Thieving.

That's the reason.

StrongerOrWeaker · 22/12/2021 21:36

I have gone through spells where I have been checked almost every single time then spells where I have been completely ignored. I wonder how the system works?
I don't mind being occasionally checked but it's really annoying when they have to check 20 odd items! I know they have to do it but it's frustrating when I know I haven't stolen anything!

DismantledKing · 22/12/2021 21:36

I had my scanning checked this week; first time for about 9 months. I think they’re being extra cautious around Xmas.

Marmite27 · 22/12/2021 21:38

They must have been on the rob.

The only time I’ve been checked, I’d forgotten to scan the last item in an offer and my shop was actually more than it would have been with the third one. That gave the staff member a laugh that day.

SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree · 22/12/2021 21:39

I wonder if the security guard noticed they weren't scanning everything?

Summerofcontent · 22/12/2021 21:40

I can completely understand them wanting to do more checks at Christmas.
There's an awful lot of expensive meat in store. More then normal anyway

00100001 · 22/12/2021 21:40

If you're going to steal meat and booze at Christmas..and least be subtle about it.

3 trollies full is a bit if LOOK AT US WE'RE STEALING.

I've no idea if security can "intercept" on the scan and shop tills, but they would have definitely been stopped at the door otherwise!

Oh God, I forgot to scan a bloody yoghurt in Asda last year too. Bought branded for baby DS and Asda own brand for me and DH and it wasn't even the expensive one I didn't scan. Bloody .79p or something. The girl checking didn't say anything at all, just scanned it and as I was apologised endlessly she just said "not to worry, it happens." Not been selected for a check since. I was so embarrassed!

I hadn't thought of that. Do they have store detectives now days or do they rely on cameras
OP posts:
MarshmallowFondant · 22/12/2021 21:42

I've been selected a couple of times at Asda too. The handheld thing tells the assistant how many items to scan. It's never more than 8.

Leaving three trolleys and walking out is madness. Unless their bill was showing as £20 and they hadn't actually scanned very much of it.

00100001 · 22/12/2021 21:46

Way back when I worked in a supermarket, there was a CCTV room, just off the shop floor, you would never notice the door was there. They could zoom in and read the time off your watch!

Next time you're in Tesco or wherever, take a look up. There's dozens of cameras. Usually at least 2 pointing at every till, as well as aisles and entrances etc and then extra ones in things like the alcohol aisle.

So yeah, they're watching! ...maybe lol

Pellewsmate · 22/12/2021 21:47

Tesco occasionally scans every item in you trolley, 1 trolley takes ages and the staff never pack things back into the trolley the way you had them. I have walked away once because I had an appointment not because I hadn't scanned half my shop. I would definitely walk away from someone scanning every item in 3 trolleys, life is too short.

RedMozzieYellowMozzie · 22/12/2021 21:47

All the meat and fridge stuff would probably have had to be wasted. Stuff is only meant to be out of the chiller for 20 minutes and if staff don't know how long it's been out they're supposed to err on the side of caution. So probably all had to go in the bin
