Random check with scan as you shop

I was in Tesco this morning doing my Christmas food shop and the people at the next checkout got a random check.
They had 3 trolley loads and refused the check.
They just walked out leaving their shopping at the checkout.
I was wondering whether these people will now have a mark put on their clubcard so they get checked each time or whether they'll just carry on being selected randomly.
Does anyone know?

Our sainsburys used to sell jars of garlic paste, it was never recognised on the scan and shop so I used to pay for my scan and shop at a normal check out and add the garlic on.

They then stopped scan and shop using the check out, so I used to pay at the self pay scan and shop and then pay for the garlic at the self serve area.

I had the eight item scan once so I said the garlic doesn’t scan so I pay at the self serve, their own gun wouldn’t recognise the garlic (so proving my point), I was then stopped for my next four shops and every single item was rescanned. On the fourth time I thought “fuck this” and just walked out.

@Pellewsmate

Tesco occasionally scans every item in you trolley, 1 trolley takes ages and the staff never pack things back into the trolley the way you had them. I have walked away once because I had an appointment not because I hadn't scanned half my shop. I would definitely walk away from someone scanning every item in 3 trolleys, life is too short.
If you walk away then presumably you'll need to come back and redo the whole shop which I'd expect to take far longer than having them rescanned.

I have left the trolley in tesco - I came up for a random check & the woman doing it was really haphazard, she picked up & scanned the same thing twice.
Because I’d only bought one it then looked like I had not scanned something & she had to rescan the whole lot.
I had to get my Dd from school so I left it all.
Now if I get a random check I make them take out the stuff they scan & put it to the side so it doesn’t get done twice by accident.

My very first scan and shop (Tesco) I had some loose onions and 2 bulbs of garlic to weigh and print the label. Was selector a random check, the assistant said it was 10 items and she scanned the garlic bulb which I had apparently forgotten to scan so they had to do the whole shop. Turns out that even though I had printed labels for garlic and onions I forgot scan them (about £1s worth) for the next few weeks I was selected.

I have started using cash again to help with budgeting and interestingly going to the self scan tills to pay it cash rather than the regular card only self scan section hasnt had any additional checks, including my £110 Christmas shop

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/12/2021 08:29

I don’t mind the random checks but I did get annoyed when I had a loaded trolley and the sales assistant scanned the wrong barcode on a multipack so it flagged as me not scanning it. Had to scan the whole lot again. It was an honest mistake but annoying have to wait ages whilst she scanned everything with nowhere to put all the stuff she had scanned and I looked like an idiot to anyone watching.

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 23/12/2021 10:53

I was checked by Tesco in may on holiday we had a full trolley worth, he rescanned everything! I was so bloody bored waiting 😅

ErickBroch · 23/12/2021 10:58

I always just thought it was random. I would say 50% of the time I get a random check. I just do a standard food shop for 2 people not with alcohol - so not sure why I would trigger one!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/12/2021 11:03

Incidentally, what do others do packing-wise when using the scan and shop? At a normal checkout, you obviously bag items up as they're scanned, but I always find myself with a full trolley of loose items that I then have to find somewhere awkward to stand, past the checkouts or in the car park, and bag them all up.

Or do you just bag them as you go and then risk having to empty out all of your nicely-packed bags if selected for a re-scan?

Safeway (remember them?!) used to have their wonderful Green Box idea, with purpose-designed trolleys, where you could box up as you went, but then easily retrieve items from the wide, open-topped boxes if need be. Fantastic idea - as long as you were going there in a car. We've still got a good dozen Green Boxes - they're very handy for all manner of applications!

AndARiverBeneathYourFeet · 23/12/2021 11:40

God I constantly get "random" checks! I must look incredibly suspicious.

Glittertwins · 23/12/2021 12:54

I've had scan checks the last couple of times. One time I had two packs of pancakes, the other time 4 identical cake boards. The assistant said to just reject and redo manually.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/12/2021 13:05

If these things do flag up for a re-scan when you scan something and then remove it again, why on earth do they think that's clear shoplifter behaviour? Surely, you would just put it in your pocket, wouldn't you? By scanning something, you're at least considering (honestly) buying it and pre-registering your intent/interest in doing so (unless you accidentally catch the button by mistake) - otherwise why on earth would you bother at all?

Reminds me of the old Famous Five TV productions they made, with their theme tune "Just leave a clue and leave the rest to the Famous Five". Maybe there is a tiny little bit of 'honour' and 'fair-play' among thieves?!

rslsys · 23/12/2021 13:11

Self Scanning is in the same category as Self Service Tills in my opinion.
If I wanted to use a scanner or work a till in a supermarket, I would have applied for a job there.
How log before manned (personned?) tills become a thing of the past, with a resulting reduction in staff?

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/12/2021 13:14

I've been checked once, they picked what looked like a random sample of items.

My MIL once got checked and she'd missed something, a bit embarrassed when you work there on the tills.

GrimDamnFanjo · 23/12/2021 13:16

Used a self scan last night. Only about my third so I've been expecting to be stopped as a newbie but all good.
This thread has demonstrated that people forget to scan so I'm really wondering how much of a loss self and scan means for supermarkets?
This isn't including those who are thieving deliberately.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/12/2021 13:19

What they lose on the swings of people genuinely forgetting to scan the odd item or two, they more than make up on the roundabout of much lower staff wages.

wonderstuff · 23/12/2021 13:32

I always seem to be picked for a scan when I spend loads, I’d have thought a lower than average spend would be more of a concern, but I guess they’ve done the research.

I bag up as I go, if I get selected for rescan they pick out and put back, normally only need to do a few items. Not bagging as you go defeats the point.
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/12/2021 13:45

The ones at my local shop are a bit trigger happy on the checking!

It was mid-covid and I was shopping for my DGM, and my GM. Three separate scanners, bagged separately, and I would pay separately for each one to make receipts etc easier.

I was selected for a random scan on the first one I did, and they just plunged their hand in before I could explain which bag went with which scanner. So none of it was scanned apparently (well no, not on that scanner it wouldn't be). It took forever to sort out!

friedeggandsauce · 23/12/2021 13:46

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll I pack as I go too- that's the whole point I thought, done in one go!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/12/2021 13:57

Hmm, seems I am probably missing the point! Should be more optimistic about not being targeted for a re-scan, I suppose!

480Widdio · 23/12/2021 14:02

Well M and S in Tamworth is losing thousands of pounds worth of goods EVERY single day, they tightened up security in the food hall. Now it is happening in the Beauty section!

I know someone who works there.

Sleepyquest · 23/12/2021 14:05

We got checked today! Luckily we weren't thieving Grin

motheroflions · 23/12/2021 14:07

I have seen this.Shopping trolly full and the women kicked up a big fuss. Her and her husband (?) walked off.

There was obviously stuff in there that they hadn't logged.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 23/12/2021 14:13

@RunningFromInsanity

There’s an awful lot of people on here who have ‘forgotten’ to scan items Hmm
Am I the only one who does a random count of items every so often to make sure the number matches whats on the scanner? (or am I just paranoid?)
funder · 23/12/2021 14:19

I got stopped today in Tesco. She checked about 25 items. Normally it's about 10.

I was told by the lady if you forget to put your handset back in the charging cradle you get flagged up for more checks too. I think it's the same if you get caught forgetting to scan something.
