what is your budget? How big/small an urban area do you want to live in? are you happy to sit in traffic queues in order to live in somewhere pretty; or would you prefer somewhere less scenic with fewer tourists? beach or countryside?

Can you narrow down the area a bit?

A lot of the south coast is touristy which bumps up the prices and traffic can be hell in the summer. I would avoid Bournemouth, Chichester and Brighton for those reasons. Winchester is lovely (but pricey) and easy reach of the coast as well as travelling down to the west country and excellent for trains to London.

Southsea is fab, so is Southbourne in Bournemouth.
