Why are people calling me by another name? This happens all of the time.

Obviously this is not my real name but let's say that my name is Deborah.

At work I send emails to clients very regularly and sign off with my actual name. However three times this week and a number of times last week clients have replied to "Dawn". The clients are not the same people, they are all different clients.

Deborah and Dawn obviously begin with the same letter but are not remotely the same otherwise! They don't end in the same letter, they don't rhyme with each other. I have even had a Christmas card from a client today addressed to "Dawn".

This has happened throughout my life and I am not sure why people are doing this. Has this happened to anyone else?

Are you Ruth?

My sister is Rebecca and she gets Rachel and Ruth.

TheZeppo · 23/12/2021 17:27

This will totally out me, but my sister is called Rebecca and the vicar called her Rachel during her wedding!

Luckily she saw the funny side. It wasn’t long after that friends episode with the wrong name, so there were comparisons Grin

I get called Fiona a lot; no idea why as my name is Lesley.

I could live with being called it to my face but often it’s folk who’ve emailed me at work where the email address contains my name and the body of any email I send out has my signature!

Op, i get called Dawn too. Have done for over 35 yrs. Most recently, last day of term ( we also have a Dawn in our office) . I think you prob may have the same name as me. I suspect we will be a similar age!!! I also suspect its our similar age group work colleagues calling us Dawn!!!! I was once called Deborah, but that was in 1984.

When i am buried i will have Cinston "Dawn" Wurchill lies here ...on my gravestone!

I have this as well! Whenever someone calls me the wrong name, it's the same name, but not similar to my name at all - think something like Rebecca being called Claire. I was convinced I had a doppelganger walking round with that name at one point.

I always used to get called ‘Rachel’ by various people when I was at school. Their reasoning was “Well you’re friends with Rachel and look similar.” We both had dark hair, but she was a good 6 inches taller and we had different coloured eyes.

I've been getting called the wrong name by email for the last year or so. I wonder whether a commonly used spell checker changed to cause this.

@Midlifemission exactly this! This is my life! 🤣

IloveJudgeJudy · 25/12/2021 08:34

I haven't rtft but DD's name is Rachel and many people have called her Rebecca by mistake including me, on one occasion Blush! I do think it's those two names in particular that people muddle up plus ime Rachel is less common than Rebecca.

You have a lovely name.

BigYellowHat · 25/12/2021 08:41

Sounds a bit like when Trigger called Rodney ‘Dave’ for all those years in Only Fools and Horses.

Midlifemission · 25/12/2021 09:44

This is so interesting especially how often it's the Rachel / Rebecca thing .
I have genuinely at times felt a bit hurt that I am not memorable enough and get a bit offended - but I will take heart from this thread .
Sorry to all the long term sufferers out there !!
