How much do you spend on holidays and how often do you go?

And do you have to sacrifice much and if so what? I know it's relative to income and I bring home around

We have a 14 night Sumer holiday booked in Europe -reckon that will be 2k after everything - all the food drinks clothes and trips and spending money and travel to and from airport.

Would love to do another few breaks into the uk but it's so expensive. I think part of the reason is I'm tied to school holidays and very inflexible.

Would love a forest lodge break with a hot tub and a London break and a uk beach and another uk city break!

I'm just interested how much you spend on holidays seen some Disney holiday and they are 7k per couple!!

And I do need to get off Instagram - some people seem to go away ALL the time.

2k for a fortnight sounds cheap to me! How many people is it for?

We mix up ski holidays with summer camping trips. A weeks skiing cam easily be 1k per person with flights, hotel, food, equipment hire etc

We very rarely go abroad as a family (in fact, only done it once with kids - though we travel individually and as a couple sometimes - but was mostly to visit family). People say UK holidays are expensive, but personally I don't find them to be crazily so.

We usually do 7-10 days in a self-catering cottage (usually Devon/Cornwall or Wales, nice detached big garden, etc.). It's usually around £700-1000 for accommodation. We might have a few meals out, but largely cook breakfast and dinner as not relaxing to sit through loads of meals out with kids. So cost of food is not massively more than it would be at home, maybe an extra £100 for the week because of alcohol and treats.

Most of our days out tend to be free ones - walking, swimming, beach, with some attractions, plus treats like ice cream or a coffee or a few drinks here and there. Maybe another extra £100 or so. Plus fuel and parking. So maybe £1500 altogether for 10 days for 4 of us.

Then we usually do 5-7 days at a family second home (dh's grandad had a house near the beach, and it's stayed in the family and we all share it now for holidays). This is free. We just have to pay for food and attractions. Again, we do lots of walking and relaxing and BBQs and beach days, with maybe 2 days of actually going somewhere we need to pay to get in.

We also usually go camping for a weekend or two. Again, pretty cheap, £20 a night or so. We also have friends who own some land so sometimes we just pitch up in one of their fields, which is free. BBQs, lawn games, exploring, swimming. There are absolutely affordable options out there in the UK and lots of lovely places to see.

Dh and l ..no dc..were abroad in Europe in September for 2 weeks.. cost 2000 for hotel/ flight and another 1000 to spend so you are doing well all in for 2000. Holidays wouldn't be a novelty and exciting if we went regularly. Enjoy lookin forward to yours.

We do two weeks on a Greek Island in summer holidays, and a couple of weekends in London to see shows (spread out over Winter). About 5k for the Greek holiday (including everything), and about £500 each London trip.

cherrypiepie · 22/12/2021 12:22

2k each that should say! Thanks is helpful great ideas too. Various things that someone can't or won't do so that does limit things. I'd love a caravan to dash of here and there but sadly not an option.

Yes I love the UK and have been many places and there are many more I would like to go to.

We go abroad to the sun a couple of times a year (in the sun now!) but can go cheap and cheerful to an apartment with cheap flights as it’s just dh and I now. I think this week will have cost us well under £1k
Aiming for 2 single weeks and a fortnight next year! We both still work and it’s one of our priorities

MrsHamlet · 22/12/2021 12:26

Also tied to school holidays. Normally do three week trips coming in at about £3000 for me. Long weekend in Europe once a year - about £500.
My trip to Hawaii for my 40th was a lot - I spent my inheritance from granny on that :)

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 22/12/2021 12:37

We tend to do a week in centre parks so that's around £1500 for accommodation plus probably about another £1000 when there on activities and food etc.

A week in the lakes so around £1000 accommodation plus probably about £500 in food, generally to national trust activities for free

Plus a week in Scotland, similar prices to the lakes I suppose.

MissAmbrosia · 22/12/2021 12:38

Summer holiday in Europe (normally self-catering) - maybe 6-8k in total? We tend to eat out a lot. Pre-Covid I would normally do a couple of short haul weekends away with friends, at say £500 - £1000. Plus a week in UK in a holiday rental for Xmas or Easter. And maybe some bargain weekend to EU CPs or a nearby city breaks for an overnight. We are in EU so it's very easy to get to lots of places by train/car. I save up over the year, but we also get 90% of a months pay in May as "double holiday pay" so that covers a large chunk of summer holiday cost.

GTAlogic · 22/12/2021 12:44

As little as possible and very rarely!

This year we paid about £350 for a long weekend in a caravan on the east Yorkshire coast and we loved it. We were meant to go to Cornwall but it was cancelled twice due to Covid so we did that instead. We hadn't been away for a few years before that. We always do short holidays in the UK because it's cheaper but still lots of fun.

PeacheyPeach · 22/12/2021 12:46

@cherrypiepie I have just been having the same conversation with my DH!
I'm constantly looking for holidays always browsing the tui site snd Airbnb in the hope I'll find a bargain!
We tend to have one summer main holiday, we did go through a phase of having a week in the Feb half term in Cornwall or Wales but found that it was cutting into our summer holiday budget. So we havnt done that for a couple of years
I love going away though, I really want to go away for next Christmas holidays I want hot sun and cocktails on the beach and my family want to go to New York , but looking at the prices for all of us I cant see us doing either!!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 22/12/2021 12:46

10 days overseas - short or longhaul depending where we fancy so budget varies wildly.

two short UK breaks - always one in London. We stay in Premier Inn family rooms so pretty cheap for accommodation.

cherrypiepie · 22/12/2021 12:52

@MrsHamlet a lovely thing to spend you inheritance on

@PeacheyPeach glad it's not just me!

My stepmother didn't think so 😂
Apparently it was irresponsible 🤷‍♀️

Workyticket · 22/12/2021 13:00

Weve booked 21 nights in a 5 star AI in Turkey for £4,100 for me, dh and ds. Summer 22.

Usually only go for a week - it's our honeymoon for last summer and dh's 50th from last winter rolled in together

We usually fit in 2 or 3 visits to friends in Scotland or the Midlands

Plus 1 night away for mine and dh's birthday

Possibly a camping trip or cheap caravan holiday too.

We're both teachers so luckily get decent leave time.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 22/12/2021 13:02

I spend just over 20k a year on holiday. My DH and I go away every two to three months and we take our adult DC on a family holiday each summer. This will probably end next year now they are in full time work.
We normally go on a family cruise, a posh European city break, a week in the med in September, a UK break or two in 5 star hotels and a long haul holiday somewhere like Cape Town or the Caribbean.

gogohm · 22/12/2021 13:15

Now, quite often, sometimes weekends away, sometimes it's camping even but 2 proper holidays usually, two booked for 2022 (one transferred from this year, wouldn't normally have two booked!) kids are all grown, though angling for a family holiday in the futureConfused

No sacrifice really because we pick things we can afford, good household income. Most recent trip was £550 ai pp and spent under £100 extra, mostly on taxis to airport this end

gogohm · 22/12/2021 13:17

Should say next year's trips are far more, but it remains to be seen if they both go ahead

qualitygirl · 22/12/2021 13:24

We usually spend 5-8k all in on the main holiday. It takes us 2 months to put it back into savings.

Fretfulmum · 22/12/2021 13:44

Post pandemic prices are very high so the figures people quote here may no longer be realistic if they were from pre covid. We recently went to the Middle East and prices have gone insane. £5k/week for 2 adults and DS at a top resort, half board.
We are hoping to do a week on a Greek island next summer and a city break in late autumn. When DS is a bit older, we would like to resume skiing again but it’ll be cost dependant

Enzbear · 22/12/2021 14:01

We have a long haul holiday January or February but not next year.
Europe city break or beach June and September.
London weekend in December.
A few UK short breaks - any time we feel the need.
Budget is flexible, depends where we go long haul but at least £10k per year.

JabberT1me3 · 22/12/2021 15:20

7 UK holidays this year
One was for 3 weeks in our camper van
Both work FT
No dependants
No debt

Normally travel frequently abroad long & short haul as well, but not going abroad currently due to ever changing covid rules

One city break carried over to next year
Nothing else booked due to covid

Love travelling

MrsLarry · 22/12/2021 15:23

We cruise twice a year and spend around £3.5k each a year.....plus spends. Would love to go more often, but unfortunately don't get enough leave.

We do lots of weekends away in between too.

countdowntonap · 22/12/2021 15:25

Our main summer holiday next year is 17 nights. Two adults to Spain, with breakfast included.
Flights £700
Hotel 1 - 9 nights - £2521
Hotel 2 - 7 nights - £2179
Ferry between islands - approximately £150

Total £5500, plus daily spending money.

The rest of our holidays will be in the UK.

Totalwasteofpaper · 22/12/2021 15:35

We ove holidays historically!!!! And historically do a 2 week in summer, 1-2 one week breaks one of which is skiing! and 3-4 weekend city breaks.

One of the things we do is have a long list of places we want to go particularly for city breaks we then see what's cheap and book based on that.

We also keep an eye on BA sales you can get some really really good deals.
