How much do you spend on holidays and how often do you go?

And do you have to sacrifice much and if so what? I know it's relative to income and I bring home around

We have a 14 night Sumer holiday booked in Europe -reckon that will be 2k after everything - all the food drinks clothes and trips and spending money and travel to and from airport.

Would love to do another few breaks into the uk but it's so expensive. I think part of the reason is I'm tied to school holidays and very inflexible.

Would love a forest lodge break with a hot tub and a London break and a uk beach and another uk city break!

I'm just interested how much you spend on holidays seen some Disney holiday and they are 7k per couple!!

And I do need to get off Instagram - some people seem to go away ALL the time.

A long haul holiday £4-6k including spending money, and a European city break £2k most years. In between we go camping a couple of times, or a weekend Airbnb in the UK.

cherrypiepie · 22/12/2021 16:02

Love all these amazing holidays.

We have also a cruise booked for this years summer break.

Thanks for reminding me about the BA SALE- was a regular before covid hit. Still think it is too early to go to states in February since omicron, though (as in higher chance of catching it and cancelling trip- not to mention any restrictions)

We have a short break planned in London for Easter time and day trip to London that might become an overnight.

I'm saving a lot of money each month for my early retirement so that is my sacrifice and every holiday I book is like another month to work! Ah well! I might find an additional job that I can do from home one day per week as I only work 4 days. Maybe a travel consultant!

Last couple of long haul, pre covid were
One year a month travelling round Bali & islands
Booked own flights
Booked the first accommodation before departure & booked the remainder of accommodation once there, got some really great bargains, some Booked the day before.

Cost ?
Worth every penny spent

carlyswirly · 22/12/2021 16:28

Normally a long haul every other year, a couple of European city breaks and either one or two Greek island trips, or similar, depending on if it's the long haul year.

Hate being this curtailed. We've managed one week away in 2 years. Everything else hasn't worked with restrictions.

carlyswirly · 22/12/2021 16:29

Spend up to £8k I guess, but haven't worked it out

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/12/2021 16:57

In non Covid times - around £6k a year. There's just me and DS, so this gets us one long haul holiday, one short haul holiday, a few weekend city breaks and a couple of Butlins type UK holidays. We haven't been abroad since 2019 though as we had loads cancelled and I couldn't be doing with the hassle, I've got one booked for May, fingers crossed.

I don't sacrifice anything but I'm lucky in that I have low outgoings and receive a lot of child maintenance (about £150 a week).

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 22/12/2021 17:18

I never really understand the point of these threads because what people spend is relative to so many things. I'm currently in a hotel that costs upwards of $5,000 per night but I've also been on holidays this year that cost that per week.

My annual holiday budget is usually between £50k and £75k per year although DH is keen for me to spend a lot less.

OhGiveUp · 22/12/2021 18:31

We go on holiday four times per year when my DH comes home.
How much we spend depends on where we go and for how long.
We only holiday abroad, never in the UK and we rarely pre book them.

@CrimbleCrumble1

I spend just over 20k a year on holiday. My DH and I go away every two to three months and we take our adult DC on a family holiday each summer. This will probably end next year now they are in full time work. We normally go on a family cruise, a posh European city break, a week in the med in September, a UK break or two in 5 star hotels and a long haul holiday somewhere like Cape Town or the Caribbean.
How do you do all that for £20k? How many DC. You seem to get a lot for your money

I agree. What people spend is relative to what they have/earn. I'm. not sure what point there is in reading about one person spending £100 per night for 2 weeks whilst another spends £40k on a week. It's such a random conversation
StrongerOrWeaker · 22/12/2021 21:30

Pre-covid, we would have had three holidays a year. Mostly in Europe but occasionally on another continent.
We work our way backwards and look for cheap flights to decide where we go (assuming we are happy with the destination) rather than pick a destination regardless of the price. We have saved a lot of money this way. A previous poster mentioned spending £700 for two flights to Spain. It's great they have the money to do that but we don't. We would consider £150 to be expensive for two flights to Spain.

It's hard to answer your question in so far as price will very much depend on location. A trip to Iceland will be much more expensive than a trip to Portugal, etc.
Depending on where we have been, we have spent anything between £700 to perhaps four grand on holidays that are one week+.

With Covid, sadly we have barely done any travelling. I do miss it and hope we can start travelling again next year!

Why? You asked a question and I answered it. I also asked why you’d find it helpful to know?

Happy holiday planning and Merry Christmas!!!

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 23/12/2021 09:33

Last holiday was over 5 years ago. We spent 4 days in a holiday rental on the east coast (it was a beautiful house in a fishing village and we never wanted to leave!). £440 for the 4 nights.

The year before we spent the same on 3 nights in a caravan. That's about it. Holidays don't feature high on my list of necessities.

We do have little getaways (probably twice a year) to stay with family who live in glorious rural settings, but never for longer than a couple of days.

Yesthatscorrect · 23/12/2021 09:59

Our holiday spending has massively cut down since covid as I'm not willing to risk our holiday being ruined by a positive test and paying for all the additional tests. It's stress I don't need.

The last holiday abroad we had was about 7k with spending money as we went to Florida and Clearwater.

In 2020 we had a few UK breaks. We go to Forest Holidays at least once a year. For next year we've booked for a weekend in Nov which has teacher training days. We are lucky to live in the North East of England so we can easily nip over to Scotland to take advantage of off peak prices as most of the school holidays are different dates.

In 2021 we went all over the UK. London, Manchester, Beverley, Scarborough twice Edinburgh twice, Glasgow, The Lakes, The Highlands. Altogether that was probably 4k.

We had such a great time that we said we weren't bothered about going abroad next year. A family member has paid for a villa abroad though so we have booked flights. I'm expecting it to be disrupted though.

The only other break we have booked for next year apart from Forest Holidays is a trip to Leeds at Feb half term. That was 250 in a nice hotel with a pool.

Sunsetsupernova · 23/12/2021 10:05

We don’t have kids so there’s just the 2 of us.

10 day beach luxury all inclusive in the summer = £4K approx
2 night break either before Christmas or over new year = £1,300 this year
A couple of city breaks during the year = £500 each

All excluding spending money so probably double for the shorter breaks and then an extra £1,000 during the summer as we like to rent a car and eat out a fair bit.

IsAnybodyListening · 23/12/2021 10:13

Family of 4 here, DC's now 16 and 21. Pre Covid it would be 14 nights AI in a hot country, normally would spend about 4.5k for this, plus a few hundred for day trips and eating out if we get bored of all inclusive.

Next year visiting my DM in an EU country, so flights for the 4 of us maybe 700 ish, but we have free accommodation, but will then pay for food and daytrips.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 23/12/2021 12:14

turnaroundtime i have 3 adult DC and 2 of them go on the summer holiday with us which is usually a cruise. All the other holidays, normally about 4 more are just my DH and I.

mylittleyumyum · 23/12/2021 14:11

Family of 4, normally £6k on summer holiday, further £1.5-2k on a 4-5 day break in the Canaries in winter.

You never really understand the point of these threads but have come along to helpfully point out you spend a huge amount on holidays?
PeacheyPeach · 26/12/2021 15:21

Can I ask while we are on the subject of holidays 😂 what is the canaries like in the winter, does it get properly warm and what are the pools like?

Onlyrainbows · 26/12/2021 15:25

We budgeted around £10k for 2 weeks in MX

FatBettyintheCoop · 26/12/2021 15:26

Last holiday was just me and DS staying with my family in London 5 years ago.

Used to go on lovely holidays abroad longhaul pre- kids.

Now, very rarely take any sort of holiday as too expensive and too much hassle organising care for the animals.

Maybe in a couple of years when youngest DS is around 14/15?

troppibambini6 · 26/12/2021 15:28

We budget 15k a year. Family of 6. We do two holidays abroad a year. Usually 2 or 3 weeks in the summer and a week in May.

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 26/12/2021 16:47

Pre Covid one Florida holiday a year 12k ish between 2 of us.
