How much do you spend on holidays and how often do you go?

And do you have to sacrifice much and if so what? I know it's relative to income and I bring home around

We have a 14 night Sumer holiday booked in Europe -reckon that will be 2k after everything - all the food drinks clothes and trips and spending money and travel to and from airport.

Would love to do another few breaks into the uk but it's so expensive. I think part of the reason is I'm tied to school holidays and very inflexible.

Would love a forest lodge break with a hot tub and a London break and a uk beach and another uk city break!

I'm just interested how much you spend on holidays seen some Disney holiday and they are 7k per couple!!

And I do need to get off Instagram - some people seem to go away ALL the time.

£4-5k on a two summer holiday somewhere in Europe, £1500-2000 on a UK break at Spring Bank and then sometimes £500 or so on a few days away in February half term. We like nice accommodation so spend on that but happy to self cater.

3WildOnes · 26/12/2021 19:16

We go away quite a lot but never spend 2k per person.
We usually ski in Feb or March which is about 1k per person including everything.
10 days in Europe. About 1.5k self catered accommodation £500 flights and then another 1.5k on eating in and out, excursions and a hire car. So roughly 3.5k for the 5 of us.
A few weekends camping or staying in hotels a year. Less than 1k a year.
Every other year a long haul trip for 10 days. Last one was Disney Florida, I think usually about 1.5k per person.

Just for the sake of balance, nothing and never. Smile

WildStallyn · 26/12/2021 22:51

I'm surprised so many people are able to spend so much! We're not badly off by any means but spend probably max £3k per year for the 4 of us including spending money. Typically that would get us a week's self catering somewhere in Europe, a couple of camping trips and a couple of weekends renting cottages or similar.

foreverlove · 26/12/2021 23:01

Pre-Covid 3 or 4 holidays a year, 2 x 1 or 2 weeks abroad and the others shorter breaks either abroad or in the UK. The longer breaks around £5k each.

Since Covid hit and unemployment too we have only had one holiday and that was a week in and around northern England.

Now the employment situation has very much changed and we are fully vaccinated we are looking into possibly booking a cruise for this spring, budget will depend on coming annual bonuses.

Years ago DH worked for an airline and it was so good to get free or heavily discounted flights in business class - we were very lucky Smile

Indoctro · 26/12/2021 23:19

We went to Majorca in august for a week it's was £4800 plus we spent about another £1000

Went to Abu Dhabi the holiday before it was £7000

We went to caravan in October for was £500

We are family of 4

RonniePickering · 26/12/2021 23:27

Villa and flights for a fortnight, between £2.5-3k. Usually to the Canary Islands, DS is autistic and wouldn't handle a flight longer than 4.5 hours. Pre covid we would go 3 times a year.

Ibizafun · 26/12/2021 23:36

We don't go on many but the ones we do are expensive. Have a ski chalet booked which is 30k for our adult kids and their partners. Doing a cruise with my parents in summer and will probably have another shorter trip at one point, but minimum two.

Pumpkinstace · 26/12/2021 23:38

We do one week in the UK at a holiday park usually.

Normally it's about £800 and we take about £600 in spending money.

2 adults, 4 dc aged 5-10.

Sometimes we do Butlins and add the dining but take less spending money.

GinJeanie · 26/12/2021 23:39

Pre-Covid, around £2k a year for 4 of us. We're teachers so we have lots of holiday but are not super-wealthy so can't go on lots of trips away. We tend to have one holiday in the Summer usually in the UK. I pray the super-inflated prices we've seen since the start of the pandemic aren't here to stay or we'll need to spend more I guess. We are lucky to have friends and family in lovely places in the UK and abroad we can stay with if we ever need to get away and keep costs down though.

Umbongoumbongo999 · 26/12/2021 23:49

Usually we do a 'big' holiday every other year, so a cruise, Disney, Japan or Caribbean. Circa £10k for 4 of us. Plus camping and a weekend or two in the UK

In years where we aren't doing the big holiday we do a week Siblu in France £2k and then maybe a European city break in Madrid or Paris £1.5k.Or perhaps New York without the kids.

RoseMartha · 26/12/2021 23:52

Me and 2 teens. Up to a week uk break. Share a cottage or caravan with a friend with a similar aged teen.
And split the cost. Half of the total would be between £350-500 on the accommodation and about £200 for me and dc on food and activities. Friend is better off and will spend more on that but we often pool resources.

Total cost for me £550-700

crackofdoom · 27/12/2021 00:01

Oh, I have LOADS of holidays (airily). I go away all the TIME, I LIVE for my holidays, me!

Let’s see, there’s the holidays with the kids, where I pay as much as- ooh-£20 a night for a campsite, and then there’s all the weekend breaks on my own, where it’s about £10 a night for the campsite. Sometimes we’ll spend as much as £15 for the 3 of us on a slap up meal from the chip shop!! (cheap, as we’re veggies).

😆😆😆

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2021 00:05

Whit week in France
August in France
Often October 1/2 term week
(Managed August and October this year)

DH and DD ski at Feb half term; DD and I have a little winter sun.

Now DC are grown up we were planning so much more pre covid. Northern lights cancelled in 2020 along with a break in Stratford in the summer 21 and a beautiful cottage for Christmas this year 21. The last two due to one or other DC catching covid.

PlanetNormal · 27/12/2021 00:08

In normal times we would usually have at least three holidays a year, taken in May, June, September or October, plus I go away for a few weekends on my own while DP is occupied with his hobby. We don’t really do beach resort type breaks and we try to avoid going away during school holidays. As for budget, we probably spend £6-8k a year on holidays. We don’t skimp, but we don’t splash out on 5* hotels on every trip either.

This may seem a lot of money to many people, but we all have choices about how we spend our disposable incomes. My day-to-day spending on stuff such as clothes, make-up, hair & beauty treatments, coffee, phones, interior decor, subscriptions etc etc is minimal.

coochyboochy · 27/12/2021 10:09

We usually spend approx £3.5k for 2 adults & 2 kids, all inclusive somewhere sunny at a water park type resort in Europe or similar resorts.

AuntieMarys · 27/12/2021 10:14

We spent in 2019 £6k for 2 of us in Greece for 9 days, and £7k for a week in New York. This year a week in Wales about £1800.
That includes eating out/ drinks. We eat out a lot 😀
Have booked a week in Wales again for 2022 and hopefully some city breaks.

coochyboochy · 27/12/2021 11:12

Mine should say for 7 nights.

IcedAbstinente · 27/12/2021 11:20

I would say we spend about 3 k in an ideal year. It's a week away to Greece or Cyprus (about £2k) and then I try and do a couple of weekend trips away to places like the Isle of Wight / London / a cathdral city. Maybe 1-2 of those trips. There are 4 of us, but DH will come to the abroad holiday and not the UK holiday usually so me and 2 DCs.

IcedAbstinente · 27/12/2021 11:20

Oh, mine does not include eating out or trips within the holiday itself.

IcedAbstinente · 27/12/2021 11:25

In terms of sacrificing things - well, we are fairly frugal in our day to day lives and I put a sum of money a month away into a designated account. I was hoping that next year we would be doing a huge trip - 5 weeks around Australia so am saving for that - but I am resigned to the idea we will not do that. We do not smoke. DH does not drink. I am saving money in Dry january and putting the money saved into my separate account. I buy supermarket clothes and we have old cars. When I first started my separate account I worked out how much I was spending on coffees at work and takeaway sandwiches and started making my own (except for Fridays where I had a cafe lunch with a colleague) and putting that into the separate account. It adds up remarkably. I started doing that because I could not work out why other people were having amazing holidays and I could not work out why i had nothing left at the end of the month. So i whittled away at the added extras that you do not even notice- circa £15.00 a month on magazines for example.

coochyboochy · 27/12/2021 11:49

Also forgot to give it as a proportion of our annual household income (excluding child benefit) before tax which is £53k, so £3.5k is about 7% of that.

userisi2 · 29/12/2021 09:17

We save £500 a month for holidays and put DH's "bonus" towards them, this gives us between £6000-£8000 depending on the year, 4 of us. We've been using the money towards the house since Covid though, we have 2 trips abroad planned for 2022, hopefully Florida 2023.

£500 is quite a large chunk of our monthly income relatively speaking, there's plenty more sensible ways we could spend that money but it's a big priority for us, kids are only young once, so much of the world to see etc etc. we will prioritise it for as long as we can.

cherrypiepie · 29/12/2021 22:04

@IcedAbstinente that's really helpful. I had a frugal year a few years ago and haven't been quite a strict in this past year so it quickly mounts up to £100 month gone on treats!

@coochyboochy I'm also 7.3% just worked it out

@userisi2 i like to see how you are prioritising and I agree.

I think we need to do some non-essential work on the house (buy new decent garden furniture/ new flooring in a couple of rooms and a few bits of furniture/ some very essential landscaping (trees removing and weeds dealt with!) so could easily spend a few £1000 as would like some decent stuff. It's all about priorities is suppose and balancing it all.

I am very lucky I work 4 days and can't do an extra day on site but would do a small job wfh if I can find one to help out with all these very e treats!

Feeling grateful and fortunate now and thank you for all your ideas!
