Nextdoor App

We received a letter through the door from a resident in the next road encouraging people in the community to download the Nextdoor app and login using a code for our specific area. They say it’s for selling/free stuff, lost pets, local safety info etc.

I’m quite a private person (no social media with my actual name on) and don’t really know any of the neighbours.

Does anyone use this? Are there any things I should be mindful of? I’m not interested in local gossip or making friends, though would be happy to help if there were any people needing support - shopping, dog walking etc.

Funnily enough we got this today as well.

My mum asked me to help her join when I was visiting her a few months ago but then she started getting loads of notifications from it, and asked me to deactivate her again.

We have a local Facebook group for stuff like finding a plumber, or being alerted to local crime so I can't really see the point, it seems like duplication to me.

LusciousLondoner · 22/12/2021 10:10

It's for lost cats & people moaning about the council. And an awful lot of whingers in general! It's quite depressing

SantasGotABigOne · 22/12/2021 10:11

We signed up. You don't have to make your presence known, so no need to post. Its not just your street but wider area.

Some of the stuff posted is hilarious. I've seen someone ask "wheres the best place to buy a kebab" and some not so funny, like someone's been scammed/car has been broken into & they're warning people. That kind of thing.

WorraLiberty · 22/12/2021 10:12

I joined mine a few days ago (I didn't bother using the code I was sent)

It's like the most dead and boring local FB group you can imagine.

LittleBearPad · 22/12/2021 10:13

It’s vaguely handy for recommendations or looking for reviews

cherrypiepie · 22/12/2021 10:15

I was going to join up but had to give my full address so didn't.

Will stick to the local Facebook group which is generally about how awful the school are, dogs and dog poo, bins, the odd escaped parrot etc

Happyrascalsmummy · 22/12/2021 10:26

I've been on it for a few years now. It's the only place I look now when in need of any kind of tradesperson. It seems very friendly and helpful, more borrowing ladders and returning found items than dog poo and planning permission posts.

Badknitter · 22/12/2021 10:28

Mine has various body shop at home /energy company sign up schemes. And lots of complaints about pretty much everything

LIZS · 22/12/2021 10:34

It is a commercial site. You can join for recommendations of local tradespeople , local events etc but the letters of recommendation from your "neighbour" are probably fictitious.

TroysMammy · 22/12/2021 10:36

Mine is lost cats, tradesperson recommendations and at the moment incorrectly delivered mail and parcels.

LividLaVidaLoca · 22/12/2021 12:10

I joined once. Seemed like it was for people too old to know Facebook existed? And here’s me too old for Instagram. Deleted it after a week.

tobypercy · 22/12/2021 12:20

I doubt the invite was really from your neighbour. They have standard marketing stuff that's written to sound that way.

gogohm · 22/12/2021 12:22

I use it, useful for learning about temporary road closures, finding a repair person, lost things and generally being friendly but it's not too much.

Hawkins001 · 22/12/2021 12:32

It seems to be similar to Facebook groups

Sunsetsupernova · 22/12/2021 12:34

In the area I used to live it was extremely useful. Now we’ve moved and our new one is full of lost cats, complaints about helicopters and the same busybodies commenting on every single post. I don’t use it anymore.

girlmom21 · 22/12/2021 12:36

We have it and it's for the local community - not just the immediate area.

PriamFarrl · 22/12/2021 12:37

I have it. It’s useful for thinks like missing cats. I once found a lost wallet in the street and it was reunited with its owner via next door.

Sparklingbrook · 22/12/2021 12:38

I am in mine. Like a PP said it's all lost cats and what charity shops are taking stuff at the moment.

I would probably ask on there if I was looking for a tradesperson.

winnieanddaisy · 22/12/2021 13:13

I have the app but refused notifications. I do get the odd email , usually about lost cats , asking for tradesmen recommendations or selling stuff . Have the odd nosy at it when I'm bored .

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 22/12/2021 13:19

I joined when our cat went missing (he reappeared after a couple of days).

It was fun for a while, I remember Miriam Morgolyes posting a few times, mostly recommendations of things like fishmongers.

But now it's just a constant stream of paranoia and low level crime reports.

Elphame · 22/12/2021 13:22

I read their privacy terms and decided not to sign up.

Read them very carefully before you decide to join.

IDontLikeMyself · 22/12/2021 13:28

Lost cats
‘Free to collector’ items
For sale items
“Can anyone recommend a plumber/roofer/boiler repair/painter & decorator…”
Moaning posts about the refuse collectors dropping rubbish and
Daft posts asking “which bin is it this week?”

Saucery · 22/12/2021 13:30

It’s not worth joining if you have a lively local FB group you can join instead (if you are on FB of course).
