Bit worried about my itchy boob

My left breast has been itchy for a little while. Not always, comes and goes but definitely itchy, sort of around one side.
Woken up today and there is a little itchy spot on the nipple and the breast is itchy again. I can't tell if the spot is raised or not because it is on the areola, where it's bumpy anyway iyswim. It sort of looks a bit exzcema like, feels a bit rough to the touch.
I do get a bit of exzcema sometimes on other bits of my body but the itching predates this little spot.

Should I go and see the doctor?

I'm 46 and not menopausal (yet).

Yeah worth chatting to the gp

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 22/12/2021 06:55

Do you think it sounds like something to worry about? I will make an appointment.

I've had this and found a lump in the other breast at the same time so got a referral from GP. Luckily all was well but if anything feels wrong then you need to speak to GP. It's probably nothing but just not worth the risk x

What skin treatments have you tried to rule out eczema for example?

Bubblty · 22/12/2021 07:00

I think anything that has got you concerned enough to be asking if you should be concerned is reason enough to speak to the GP.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 22/12/2021 07:00

I've got a face to face appointment on Monday. I can't feel any lumps in either breast. Just the left one sometimes itches and now there's this little spot right on the areola.

Nothing cos this little spot only appeared this morning, like 45 minutes ago and the itchy boob (not limited to the areola, sort of generalized itchiness) didn't have any obvious cause to apply cream to.

As it is described as external irritation I would treat it as exzcema for now and see if it gets worse or goes away.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 22/12/2021 07:08

The breast isn't red or swollen.

But the itch isn't limited to this spot it kind of itches all around the nipple

oh good op. best of luck

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 22/12/2021 08:58

Could it be a Montgomery gland? Sometimes I've had one get a bit swollen and (gross alert) I squeeze it and some white stuff (sebum?) comes out.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 22/12/2021 09:05

The thing is the itching predates the slightly raised and exzcema-like bit on the areola. Maybe they aren't connected anyway.

Have you ruled out a new bra? Washing powder etc?

Nothing like that has changed.

You could be peri-menopausal at 46 and itchy boobs was one of my first indicators

JuergenSchwarzwald · 22/12/2021 10:04

I had this, I think it's my bra. It went away when I used a different bra, and came back when I used the other one again. But if you've ruled that out, best to talk to a doctor.

It could be. My periods are still regular but I feel like the hormones are a bit up and down (feeling emotional/tired with PMT, more than before). I suppose it might be that the itching is hormonal and this little exzcema-like spot is cos I've been scratching all around it.

I’m 50 and periods still regular but very definitely peri-menopausal. It takes years for your periods to become irregular in some cases, different for everyone. I would definitely read up on peri menopause and flag it up with GP.

Newgirls · 22/12/2021 14:10

Unless you had an early menopause for some reason, all women 45 plus are peri really. Hormones have been fluctuating and falling since early 40s. Skin itching is definitely a sign of this as our lovely nourishing oestrogen declines.

Worth getting it checked out if worried tho.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 27/12/2021 10:23

So I saw the doctor today (I'm not in the UK and it's not a holiday here today) and he was totally unconcerned and has prescribed a cream for it.
